Polly Teale's expressionist production of Henrik Ibsen's consummate masterpiece is innovative but misconceived. Tension is dissipated by the weak acting of the men and, while Anne-Marie Duff makes for a potentially marvellous Nora, beautifully negotiating the shifts in her character, she's ultimately constrained by the dictatorial crudity of the surrounding aesthetic. At the opening she's literally in a doll's house, which strikes a condescending, obvious note from which she and the play never manage to escape.
