Peer Gynt, by Henrik Ibsen, is a great play, with all the madness and absurdity of Alice in Wonderland.

This 1962 translation by Michael Meyer, performed by the Cygnet Theatre Company, gave this production, set on a bare stage, a decidedly contemporary feeling. And director Alistair Ganley encouraged his actors to go at a cracking pace.

The play opened with a burst of fury from Peer's mother as she berated her wayward son, and the energy level never faltered. Neither did the humour, which teetered on the edge of savagery.
