'Ghosts' delivers hauntingview of decaying family life

Henrik Ibsen wrote "Ghosts," on stage tonight through Sunday at Illinois State University, in 1881.

In his notes about it, he wrote that "marriage for external reasons brings a Nemesis upon the offspring."

Taking place at the rural Alving estate in the fjords of Norway, the terrible secrets of the five characters are exposed throughout a single afternoon and evening.

Mrs. Alving is just about to open an orphanage in the name of her deceased husband (whom she detested), while at the same time she is jubilant about the long-awaited return home of her son, Oswald.
