Critical Commentary

Toward the end of his career Ibsen remarked on the thematic continuity
of his plays, and he insisted that they be studied as a group rather than
separately. A brief survey of Ibsen's major plays will bear out the truth
of his contention.

His two early dramas Brand (1886) and Peer Gynt (1867) deal with opposing
but complementary themes. Both heroes are concerned with self-realization
and both fail until the very end to come to grips with their own
