Introduction:

In this play, written in 1886, Ibsen continues the emphasis on symbolism
and character analysis that marks The Wild Duck. Rosmersholm carries the
method a great deal further, to the extent that the entire play depends more
upon the successive developments in the inner state of the main character,
Rebecca West, than upon any external events. The main plot of the play is
concerned with Rebecca's gradual conversion from her freethinking selfish
ways to a more truly liberal and noble view of life. Ibsen almost entirely
