The Master Builder
Introduction.
In 1892, two years after Hedda Gabler, Ibsen returned to the
experimentation with symbolism that marked the preceding two plays,
Rosmersholm (1886) and The Lady from the Sea (1888). The symbolism in The
Master Builder is complex and sometimes vague, but it is possible to extract
an autobiographical interpretation. Accordingly, the churches which Solness
builds at the beginning of his career represent Ibsen's romantic plays,
