Introduction:
Beginning with The Wild Duck (1884), Ibsen turned away from dramas of
social significance to devote his energies to psychological analyses of
character. His next two plays, Rosmersholm (1886) and The Lady from the Sea
(1888), are thus more concerned with inner emotional conflicts than with
social or political themes. Like The Wild Duck, both of these plays afford
penetrating analyses of character in Ibsen's usual fashion of disclosing past
