Strindberg, (Johan) August
(1849–1912) Swedish dramatist and novelist. Strindberg focused on subjective, psychological experience as the location for his plays. Drawing on the insights of Henrik Ibsen and the naturalism of Emile Zola , plays such as The Father (1887) and Miss Julie (1888) take a characteristically pessimistic view of gender relations. After suffering a mental breakdown, he produced A Dream Play (1902) and The Ghost Sonata (1907), both of which prefigure the Theatre of the Absurd and German expressionism .Read the rest of this article with a Free Trial at HighBeam Research.
