Homer (1836-1910) painted sweeping scenes from the Civil War, dramatic pictures of sea adventure and many more themes. Blacks were featured in many of his paintings, and his works had a strong emotional element. Several paintings are discussed.
A recent retrospective underlined the wide range of themes treated by Winslow Homer--from repertorial accounts of the Civil War tot he late majestic sea narratives. For the author, the ambiguous psychological content of these works lends them their air of modernity.
