Congratulations to Meredith Meacham for her thoughtful comparison (May/June, 2006) of the differing religious vistas represented by Stephen Crane's "The Open Boat" and Homer's Odyssey. Whereas Odysseus, a cultural hero, fully respects the gods, Crane's frustrated correspondent hates the indifference of the uncaring universe. He wants to throw bricks at the temple, yet realizes there is no temple to throw them at. His outrage at the cosmic injustice of life is epitomized elsewhere by one of Crane's poems:

 
   A man said to the universe: 
   "Sir, I exist!" 
   "However" replied ...
