Criticized all through September by grumbling alumni as being a young, immature and mistake-prone football team, Solvay's underdog Bearcats grew up in dramatic fashion Friday night in the friendly confines of Hadley Stadium.
Led by the all-out efforts of all-state senior tailback Mike Grobsmith and a never-say-die defense, coach Phil Merrill's Bearcats (3-0, 3-2) staged an improbable upset of formerly unbeaten, state-ranked Homer 24-22 in a Section III Class B West game.
