"He's our Homer," Life magazine says of the man it has just named the most influential American born between 1946 and 1964. He's the No. 1 Baby Boomer on its list of the 50 top members of that generation, which is the subject of the magazine's new cover story.

Kind of nice to see that Life has chosen for this honor not "our Pilate" or "our Louis XIV" or "our Rasputin" but an epic poet of homeric gifts. So who is this man, this great bearded boomer of all boomers?
