The National Gallery of Art will announce today the acquisition of Winslow Homer's "Home, Sweet Home," an early Civil War painting depicting Union soldiers at rest. Secretly purchased at Christie's through a New York dealer for $2.64 million earlier this month, the painting set a new auction record for Homer, eclipsing the $1.87 million high set in 1980.
The work is the most expensive American picture the museum has acquired at auction since 1985, when it bought "Rubens Peale With a Geranium" by Rembrandt Peale for $4 million. The National Gallery tried to keep its new acquisition quiet ...
