WINSLOW HOMER was among the most important painters in the post-Civil War era. But he played a significant role during the war, too.
As an artist-illustrator for Harper's Weekly, he covered the campaigns on the Virginia Peninsula.
Images relating to the siege of Yorktown are among 145 wood engravings by Homer at the Muscarelle Museum of Art. The show covers 1857 to 1888, the period when his work was reproduced as engravings. Half his print output is on display, and more than 30 depict the Civil War.
