TO MARK the centenary of Anton Chekhov's death this month Penguin Classics has published A Life In Letters, the first uncensored edition of his collected correspondence in any language. In her introduction, Rosamund Bartlett quotes Sergey Rachmaninov in 1933: "I'm getting to the end of Chekhov's letters. They are such a joy to read! I can't put them down. What a delightful, clever man he was!"
