Family And Early Life

Anton Chekhov had a curious life. Neither his inner existence (his
philosophy, morality, and genius) nor his public biography followed a
consistent, predictable pattern.

He was born in 1860, in Taganrog - a nasty little seaport town in the
south of Russia. His grandfather was a serf who through great toil purchased
the family's freedom. His father rose to the lower middle classes through the
acquisition of a general store - his profits came mostly from short-changing
and short-weighting.
