Introduction

On September 9, 1900, Chekhov wrote to his sister: "The Three Sisters is
very difficult to write, more difficult than my other plays." But unlike his
earlier plays, Three Sisters was a moving success in Moscow, where it was
staged at the Art Theater in January, 1901. Gorky, Chekhov's brilliant
contemporary, singled the play out as the most profound and effective of the
author's works. Chekhov had written the part of Masha in Three Sisters with
