Tokyo unveils monument to Anton Chekhov

TOKYO, Sep 21, 2004 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- A monument to Russian playwright Anton Chekhov was unveiled in Tokyo Tuesday to mark the centenary of Chekhov's death, the Novosti news agency reported.

The Russian Federation's Ambassador to Japan, Alexander Losyukov, said culture is a factor for bringing different people closer together. The monument to Chekhov is a major milestone in the development of Russian-Japanese relations, he added.

The piece was made by Russian sculptor Grigory Pototsky.
