Introduction

Except for a youthful, posthumously published attempt, That Worthless
Fellow Platonov, Chekhov did not try his hand at serious full-length plays
until 1887. With his keen sense of the dramatic and his infallible ear for
dialogue, Chekhov's talents were ideally suited for the theater. But the
mediocrity of the contemporary plays and performances had always inspired his
contempt. As he wrote to a friend: "I don't want to have anything to do with
the theaters nor with the public. To hell with them!" Nonetheless, when F. A.
