THIS Anton Chekhov study of relationships and unrequited love should have made for a gloomy night.

But director Trevor Nunn's latest Royal Shakespeare Company offering accentuated the comedy in this otherwise tragic tale.

Francis Barber was wonderfully acidic as the ruthless, ridiculous, fading actress Arcadina, while Ian McKellan was equally scene- stealing as lovable old codger Sorin. In their scene alone together, they were a mesmerising partnership.

On the whole, this production belongs to Barber. She effortlessly portrays a tantalisingly awful woman, whether it is hilariously screaming ...
