Introduction

Seven years passed between the time Chekhov failed miserably with The
Wood Demon (which was later transformed into Uncle Vanya) and before he
produced a new drama, The Seagull. In the intervening years he wrestled with
many ideas and put aside many false starts.

The inspiration for The Seagull came in an insignificant shooting
expedition with Isaac Levitan, a well-known painter. Levitan winged a
