The plays and short stories of the Russian writer Anton Chekhov are
widely popular today. His works have been translated into many languages.
Some of his plays have been made into films. Chekhov was the grandson
of a freed serf (slave). Early in life he decided to be a doctor,
and he won a scholarship to medical school. He started to write while
practicing medicine. He created hundreds of short stories before turning
to plays. His first major play was The Seagull. It was a failure at
first, but in 1898 it was produced with great success by the Moscow
