FOR A PLAY THAT SUPPOSEDLY DOESN'T TAKE us anywhere--one that's full of arrivals and departures but mainly teems with immobility--Three Sisters sure gets a lot of action. Of the four major works on which Anton Chekhov's immortality rests, this play continues to keep avid adapters and glassy-eyed fanatics up late at night. Directors love to fondle it, fuss over it and stroke it incessantly, especially if they have something to prove and concepts to burn.
