I used to really like the Gorillaz a few years back when I was in high school. This is the first single off of their new album coming out next week. I'm not sure I like it, but maybe it will grow on me. I'll probably get the album anyway, just for nostalgia's sake.

The calculated persona-making, the comic-strip characterisation, the dumb, thoughtless, girlified version of simple-minded British yobbishness - all that remains utterly unforgiveable. But you've got to say it's a great pop song. 7/10

I find the song's premise a bit wierd
It's 'daddy' in the jazz-slang sense of 'wealthy boyfriend' - which never really caught on in Europe but which crops up a lot in this genre. Not that the jazz-slang sense of the word is particularly commendable in feminist terms, but one of the joys of slang is that it doesn't give a flying one about etiquette. I still cannot imagine how they got away with that 'Finnan haddy' (http://www.thefishsociety.co.uk/binary_data/13699_7005.jpg)line.
On the 'daddy' theme, for a wonderfully inexcusable song which, even at the time, pretty much kicked feminism in the shins, check this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Vt-xeVrI3c)out.
But to get back to A-Ha - I hated them when they were in the charts, because they were sold as popstar pretty boys. But every time I hear them now, I think, "That's unexpectedly good stuff." 7/10
At the other end of a writing career, here's a proper grown-up composition (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhIkjk1y4y4) with a proper grown-up theme - a song that addresses something other than being twenty-three and horny. (Not that there's anything wrong with that, George.)

My feeling about the Velvet Underground is that it was a kindergarten that encouraged finger-painting, the results of which should never have been seen by anyone but Lou's mum - but that all that messiness nurtured the moderate talent that eventually produced Berlin, and the much more significant talent that created, amongst other things, this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hp4GFuQVY9E).

I saw them reform for a farewell last October. It was a weird and rather sobering experience.
I'm not sure what it is I find so unengaging about Radiohead. I really ought to like them. Maybe it's his voice - he always sounds like he's only doing the vocals until they get a real singer. 5/10

I hate musicals, but I make an exception for Cabaret (because it's more a straight movie complemented by stage performances, and no urchins dance on rooftops between chimney pots).
For me, this voice is too refined - in the 'processed' sense of that word - and the arrangement too glossy. Like the song a lot though. 5/10

See , I am not a fan of country music. Really - can't be doing with it. But The Wichita Lineman is not, actually, a country song. Those are not country chords, and that lyrical conceit is certainly not a country trope. It's practically metaphysical. As a writer, Jimmy Webb tended not to go for the easy or pat emotional option - but the arrangement in the Campbell version is deceptive, because it sort of leads you to believe you're listening to schmaltz.
On the other hand, the Righteous Brothers thing is absolutely, bang-on, money-in-the-bank pop cliché. Play it on a guitar - it's banal. The genius is all in the arrangement. 7.5/10

It is: inexcusable.
A propos very little, as anti-war songs go, this one's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LNB6M7yTBo&feature=related)less pat than most.
I should like Elvis Costello but he just doesn't reach me. He's upset about that, naturally. 6.5/10.

I love Alison Krause. It took me a while to warm up to her...I know she's supposed to have this beautiful, angelic voice, but the first time I heard her all I could think was that she sort of sounded like a chipmonk. It was that song on the radio about "The smile on your face... blah blah...when you say nothing at all...blah bah" (I know somoene has to know what I'm talking about here - I can't remember the title and I don't want to google). Anyway, if you can get beyond that radio release, she's good. She did a duet with Brad Paisley - Whiskey Lullaby - and I really liked it. Upon first listen, I didn't know if I liked it or not, but in the end I decided it was pretty good. And that brings me to Brad Paisley:

I'm very sorry, I was raised in rig territory. Whenever I hear anything twang-y, I have this visceral reaction that basically translates into "NO."

Oh, it's alright. I'll probably get stoned for saying this, but I'm kinda middlin' about Monty Python. Sometimes it's funny, sometimes. . .eh, it's not.
The song 6/10
Here's one from back when I was more into loud and angry than I am now:

Not my thing but certainly unique, though it becomes banal quite easily. Though I must say that the gal in the video isn't bad-looking at all :ihih: For her the vid gets a 5.7/10
