Can't deny the guy's influence, but my feeling is that he didn't do anything worthwhile after 1958. The whole Vegas period, quite apart from being the antithesis of everything rock'n'roll was about, would have been an embarrassment except for the fact that it revealed him for what he really was: a corporate entertainer whose natural consistuency was trade conventions and tupperware parties. 2/10

That was brilliant! I had to find the lyrics. Here's and excerpt:
“Oh, what a wonderful thing to be,
A healthy grown up busy busy bee.
Toying with the tulips, tasting every type,
Building up the honey-comb that looks like tripe.
I'd like to be a busy little bee,
Being just as busy as a bee can be,
Flying all around in the wild hedgerows,
Stinging all the cows upon the parson's nose!”

No it's not. It's self-indulgent crap. However, in the spirit of the game, I'll point out that you need to rate the previous song before posting one to be rated by the next correspondent. You might have been understandably misled by Brian sticking in an ad hoc comment. The rest of us usually are.

I think it stops a bit short of where it should go - but, yeah, an uncharacteristically dark bit of Disney. 7/10
I've never been a fan of Walt's work, I have to say. I find it glutinous. However, having been forced to watch Cinderella eight times a day when my daughters were toddlers, I have seen a subtextual subversion in the tale of the downtrodden stepdaughter.
When Cinderella wakes up and readies herself for a day of servitude, all the animals and birds - comedy mice and what appear to be psychedelic sparrows - lay out her clothes and make her bed and hand her a towel when she steps out of the shower. And I've noticed that, although these anthropomorphic sprites prepare a shabby dress and a patched-up blouse and a tired apron for our put-upon heroine, there's no sign of underwear. None at all. Which raises the slightly disturbing (though cheerful) possibility that right the way through the movie Cinderella's going commando.
I've always thought it a little implausible that the Prince - who has resisted romantic commitment so long and so successfully - should become so utterly obsessed with Cinderella on so brief an acquaintance. However, one is now intrigued to know what he may have seen reflected in those glass slippers.
Anyway, here's a change of pace. I really don't know why I like this. It's not my kinda music at all. I think it's that there's an emotional honesty about it that's impossible to dismiss....

I think there are two problems with that.
The first is that after the opening two lines, nothing new happens. Once you've clocked that its BPE's song done to a pretty piano, you're not going to get any more out of it.
Second, it's very difficult to satirise something that was tongue-in-cheek to begin with. It rather implies that you missed the joke and took it seriously, and the resulting spoof makes the spoofer look sillier than the originator.
However - it is possible to make this kind of thing work, if you add a dimension to the original that makes it a new thing.
I think that Ben Folds manages exactly that here...

Another McLean (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dipFMJckZOM)
The perfect excuse to trot out this little essay...
It’s a fair bet that more people know the refrain from Don McClean’s song about the man than could name five Van Gogh paintings. This is indicative of the problem with Vince.
Ate paint, became obsessed with a whore, self-mutilated, went mad, committed suicide unappreciated and in poverty. Pretty much the template for contemporary requirements of an artist. With a résumé like that, how could he not be a genius?
Well, look at the pictures. Heartfelt daubs, unarguably. Vibrant with colour straight out of the pot and bearing the frantic strokes of a man in a hurry to get along to the brothel. But twenty-five million dollars for a still life of flowers in a vase? If cost were a measure of talent, that would make Van Gogh a better painter than Michelangelo, Picasso, Raphael – which, let’s be honest, he ain’t.
He is, though, a more famously tortured soul than any of them. He’s the fine art equivalent of Marilyn Monroe – a lost and misunderstood spirit that everyone feels they could have saved, given a chance meeting over a glass of absinthe. People adore the man – and his art by association - because he’s the personification of the romantic view of the artist. Mad, sad and unrecognised in his lifetime, he has taken on a dually-vital role in our view of art.
Firstly, he lets us off liking anything contemporary, because he’s the proof that, despite our philistine laziness, the good stuff will eventually rise to the top. We have no idea what’s going on in art these days but – hey – we’re not supposed to. Posterity will sort it out for us.
Secondly – and complementarily - he allows us to be retrospectively insightful about genius. We are the posterity that rescued Vincent’s work. We are more perceptive than any of his blinkered and cloddish contemporaries. We don’t know what we like, but we know lots about art.
Our fondness for Van Gogh amounts to self-gratifying necrophilia – and it’s a pity, because the work is really not bad at all. Unfortunately we don’t stop to listen to the clarified silence of the starry night. We’re too busy amplifying the echoed whines of a nutcase with earache.
And I don't like the song much either. 3/10

That's an interesting point you raise about a semi-tone higher. It may be that the recording techniques of the time required singers to raise their voices to achieve the desired effect. However, I maintain that it is much more acceptable to the sub-humanoid world of the present 'music' scenario.
I forgot to rate the song, I'll give it 5/10 for the video of Turkey.
