I was exactly the right age for UB40, and I was a white kid from precisely the multicultural background to which they ought to appeal. But they gave me an ache behind the eyes then, and they still do now. It just all sounds so unconvincing and utterly devoid of balls. Nah..... 2/10

Bravo, Sancho, Bravo. That woman had the voice of an angel. I’ll give Ella 10 out of 10 only because an 11 would be mathematically ambiguous.

Thanks, Sancho. What say we change gears? Here’s a little number by Fatboy Slim, Weapon of Choice. I love the look of pure bliss Christopher Walken wears as he dances on the table.

You’ll never get an argument out of me when you’re crankin’ some Zep’. In fact, just the other day I got into a stereo war with a guy in the car next to me at a stop light; He was thumping out Hip Hop from a pair of subwoofers that were more powerful than his Honda engine, and I was blasting Zeppelin from a pair of speakers nowhere near as powerful as my 455cu V8.

I won.

A-! The A is for the full-throttle, balls-to-the-wall, Rock-N-Roll. And the minus is for (allegedly) ripping off so many riffs from guys on the Chitlin’ Circuit and never really ‘fessing up to it.

I'm gonna go with an 8 outta 10. That tune floored me the first time I heard it. I didn't think you could do that sort of thing in rock-n-roll. And that's coming from a guy who has always preferred amped, slightly out of tune, roadhouse rock to so-called rock operas. Minus two only because I've heard it too many times. And I still don't know what "scaramooch scaramooch will you do the fandango" means.

Anyway, I'm digging Papaya's Bobby Darin tune too. In fact, a couple of days ago on another thread, Pendragon and I wrote Mack the Knife into our Private Eye story as a character. Ah, but then yesterday I killed him with a Chinese Throwing Star. These things happen, you know.

So then, I hear this guy is HUGE in France:

Let's get something with an historical background up in here. This song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5CaQ37VYvw) is about a Finnish sniper named Simo Häyhä. He had one year of state-mandated military training and was living as a farmer when the Soviets invaded Finland during the Winter War, so he grabbed his modified Mosin–Nagant and headed into the woods with one day's worth of supplies every day for 100 days and killed every Soviet that came into his kill zone. He has the most confirmed kills in any major war at 505, which he accomplished in an extraordinarily brief span of time, WITHOUT using a scope (he didn't want the glare to give him away). The Soviets mounted several missions just to take out this one guy but couldn't, and because of this, plus his white camouflage, they called him "The White Death."

I like this one - though now I can admit it as I've discovered that Nile Rodgers wrote and played on it. (You can hear the Chic type guitar on it).

A mate of mine once went into a record shop in the early 80s to get this. He asked for it after the punks in front of him had bought Blood Round My Mouth by the Slaughterers - or some such thing. He laughed at the odd contrast it made.

hi everyone---could I ask a small favor please?

my internet connection is too slow to watch video, and sometimes even to get to a site, like youtube, where videos are linked.

when you post the link to the song, could you please also say the title and artist? I might have it, or might know, and then might be able to join in to an extent...

I had to google it myself to find out, but it's a passage from the Faust Cantata by the Soviet composer Alfred Schnittke, depicting (I believe) Faust's descent into Hell. The singer here is going at it hammer-and-tongs.

I'm glad you liked it, Loka. And yes, it's the section where the devil sings a mocking and menacing tango of Faust's descent into Hell.

Yes. I'm not too familiar with PotF, though - I mostly listen to classical, and when I don't, it's usually Jazz - but they're alright. Pekka Pohjola and Sibelius are a couple of my Finnish favourites.

I'll take that challenge!

I enjoyed it (I'm a bit of a sucker for country music), so that's an 8/10 from me.

I can't say I'm a sucker for country music myself, but it's good in moderation. And I always accept Cash. 8/10
