Little Boxes is redolent of my childhood - my dad used to sing it around the house, and it still runs through my head whenever I look out of a train window and see a new housing estate. As social satire goes, the song's pretty trite, but Malvina is engaging just because she's so incongruous. 6/10

Helen Forrest apears to be in black-and-white. And there's a Vaudeville dame on a bench. And Artie is even squarer than Bo Diddeley's guitar. So things do not bode well for Deep Purple. Not my speed at all - 4/10.

Not sure I'd call them pre-punk. Love Bites was released in '78, a year after Spiral Scratch and the departure of Howard Devoto. I'd say that the Buzzcocks were chronologically bang in the middle of punk and attitudinally a precursor to the New Wave.
Christ, I'm old.

Moving gratefully along, here's a little thing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QlsqyxUkro&feature=related)from the band that recorded the original of Cum on Feel the Noize. There was a moment in the seventies when Queen earned the opportunity, had they chosen to take it, to change the way rock music worked. What's funny is that whenever I listen to music on youtube, I usually put down the video and do something else while I'm listening. Well I brought the video back up like in the middle of the song and was like, "this is the gayest thing I've ever seen!"
As far as the song goes, I've heard it many times before, but never have been keen on the 80's. That said, I still find this song to be a classic and makes me somewhat nostalgic when my step-mom would listen to it when I was a kid.
8/10
Okay here's super-nostalgia for me.

Haha, I think Bonnie Tyler's "Brighteyes" might be the only 80s video to be equally over the top.
Edit: Oh ya, love Phil Collins, Genesis, and Peter Gabriel. You have to love the entry of the drums near the end. 8/10
Now I need to pick something.

Wow, unbelievably - a classic piece which I actually know! :)
I like the smooth sound of it. I find it hard to explain, but especially the first minute the sound is ... is ... soft?! Can you say that about music? I mean soft as in soothing and dreamy. Maybe I better stop talking now - just listen ;)
8/10
Sarah McLachlan - a great songwriter (lyrics!) and singer. Here is one of her less known songs:

That was awesome - thanks for posting that. I wouldn't have heard it otherwise because I can't bring myself to listen to her for some reason probably because I am only vaguely aware of one release that I didn't like so much.

Here's some French Canadian music from the 20s, very folk oriented and different from France's music. Obviously, with much less jazz influence.

Haha, I also came across this one from the same singer which is outrageously offensive.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tv_DcRYX43o From Mulholland Drive, though unfortunately I can't find an actual clip so it's just the song. Oh well, it's a masterful scene in the film and IMHO Lynch's finest moment.

I've noticed that not only am I more critical than most about songs posted here, but I also seem to come in just when Scheherezade has posted, so I appear to be relentlessly snide about her picks.
In this case, I'm pleased to say that I think The Cure are a terrific, if limited, idea and when they first appeared (when I was about nineteen) I really liked Three Imaginary Boys, and then I really disliked The Forest, and after that Robert and I have had a kinduv on-off thing which we've come to understand how to live with. 8/10
Similar era. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yBlVjJQ85c) Incidentally, for unashamed pop music, this is the best bass player since McCartney.

For some reason, every time I hear The Tubes I think of the outro of a fictional Corey Feldman film. Yes, it's the outro, and the film is not real, but I still have Corey Feldman in my head. Thus, 4/10.
