Trite song by a man with all the charisma and creative talent of yesterday's spinach dip. 2/10

A moment from the four or five during which Rod (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEoc13bwCw0)wasn't merely embarrassing.

When The Faces split up, Ronnie Lane - the bass player - decided to eschew the Lear Jet lifestyle, and he went out on the road in a bunch of gypsy caravans with his wife and kids, his band and crew, and a whole bunch of clowns, jugglers, stiltwalkers and fire-eaters. A wonderfully romantic idea, admittedly, but hopelessly ill-organised. The caravans were barely roadworthy; the local authorities were unwelcoming; the electricity generator was temperamental and, worst of all, Ronnie didn't think it terribly important to get around to paying anyone.

One night, following a sparsely attended gig in a downpour, the band's disgruntled guitarist slipped off into the darkness, having left a note pinned to the door of Ronnie's caravan, which read:

Goodbye, cruel circus. I'm running away to join the world.

Nick Cave shares your opinion Mark. When asked about the current state of popular music he remarked "I'm forever near a stereo saying, 'What the **** is this garbage?. And the answer is always the Red Hot Chili Peppers."

Thing about Neil - I like the guy, respect his choices, admire his waywardness, and I'm truly fond of his wit, his self-deprecation and his ability to be simultaneously serious and facetious. But I just can't bear his music. I really want to like it, but it irritates the hell out of me. 3/10

2/10 I tend to agree with you - he has a talent for writing irritating love songs. Just the Way You Are must be the most patronising and insulting compliment a woman has ever been offered. "Hey - you're stupid, predictable and unadventurous, but I'm lazy and pretty dumb myself so - you know - your complete lack of attractiveness is okay by me."

I found the subtextual juxtaposition of cotton, images of African-Americans in fields and singing about the 'ole' times' to be a little bit subversive, but maybe that's just me and merely unintended. Either way, I'm not that into country anyway. 2/10

This is such a touching and haunting song, and truly a fine eulogy from one of America's greatest artists. I'm not much of a sentimental guy with music, but I usually almost cry when I hear this. Stranger than ever that this is actually a cover of a Nine Inch Nails song, it fits him perfectly and makes it extremely personal and powerful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clq01TXQR0s

Perhaps I'm wrong, but you appear to have the measure of guitar-strumming pop groups. It's worth remembering, however, that 'Cabaret' is only an American pastiche of 1930s Berlin.

I've just checked some of your other input to this thread and have to admit that I was wrong.

It's actually a film adaptation of a Broadway musical, which was an adaptation of a play, which was in turn inspired by the short stories of Christopher Isherwood, which were based on his own experiences in Weimar Germany. However, I'm confused what that has to do with the music.

Edit: Song above is a little too Bryan Adamsish for my taste, 3/10.

It's many years since I read Isherwood's book Goodbye to Berlin which was actually filmed before as 'I am a Camera', based on the play of the same name by John van Druten. Although I have seen the film, I wouldn't say that it was particularly good but I think it gives a more accurate portrayal of 1930s Berlin than Cabaret. The music is incidental to the momentous events that were taking place in Germany at that time and, to my mind, tends to detract from the underlying seriousness of Isherwood's book.

I don't think that the music is incidental at all. The songs are not merely standalone performances in the club that's the focus of the plot - they are also adroitly used as oblique commentary on the social and political events that form the backdrop to the story. It's an uncharacteristically subtle technique for a Hollywood musical, and I'd say it's pretty true to Isherwood.

Of course, you might object to the book being taken as the basis for a musical at all - and that's a fair position. But then it wouldn't matter how the music was used - just that it existed.

Personally I don't think the subject matter of the book was suited to a musical interpretation which, in my view, was over the top. However, it is only one opinion among many and will no doubt be treated as such.

Hmm, I seem to have started something here. To be honest, I just pick songs that come into my head, not necessarily stuff I listen to; I mostly listen to classical, which wouldn't really work in a thread like this.

I love the song Cabaret, but mostly because one of the most inspirational figures in my life has a tendency to sing it while she's working or doing chores; I have thus always associated it with her! I haven't actually seen the film at all.

I don't dislike the song as I indicated in my post. It certainly appeals to me more than the any pop group. However, I did find Liza Minnelli's performance rather strident in comparison to that of Julie Harris in the non-musical version of the film but, as I have said, it's a question of personal preference.

I don't think I've ever knowingly listened to the Foo Fighters before and I must say, the experience was not all I hoped it would be. 3/10

@Papaya, I saw the Foo Fighters a couple years back on St. Patrick's day and they played a great 3-4 hour show, for a reasonable price too. Not my favourite music in the world, but a great band when it comes to concerts.

@Basil - I don't hate this, but it's not doing anything for me, 5/10

A bit obsessed with this band at the moment:

Now to reply to the Bowie Song - 8/10
