Max, are you asking if it 'really looks weird' you mean? I didn't say it looks 'really weird', I said interesting weird. But I'd like to see an anime version... a weird anime version... yeah... :)
Oh, it's okay. I was just wondering because I've done some other weird things which I haven't posted so far... on second thought, I can't remember which ones I still have, but I do remember I erased a few out of not being satisfied :p Then again, I keep some pieces that now seem pointless and I dunno what to do with them

Max, it looks fine. You did a great job. :p
And I think you guys are just saying that to say that. I didn't really like Day 07. It doesn't look right to me. But all I can say is "Oh well, I just gotta keep going. If I don't like that one, then I might as well quit complaining and make the next one better. One of my favorite favorite sayings is "No use crying over spilled milk." Gotta keep going. :D
And how did a simple declaration of my dislike turn into an optimistic speech?

Here are a few simple sketches I've worked on also...practicing as much as I can with my pen and tablet.

Maybe I'll get around to putting color, and maybe I'll just leave them alone. depends on whether I ever want to . Right now, they're staying rough sketches.

Sometimes we tend to do it when we need to make it through a harsh moment. It's a survival mechanism, I think http://smiles.kolobok.us/artists/just_cuz/JC_thinking.gif

Hey Max, You have your style which is soooo cool and I cannot reproduce, and I have mine. We all have our own styles don't think of it being a bad thing. It just means awesome variety! :p I always enjoy seeing your work.
And look at Mystyr, he does awesome things that I'd only dream of doing(because I don't have that kind of patience)

I, on the other hand, have no artistic abilities. I have always wished I could paint. Sometimes I do... but it is not good, unfortunately.
Max, the talking cello is pretty awesome. Reminds me of the old, educational cartoons I used to watch... :)

I've wanted to sketch and paint in the traditional ways but I also doubt I can do it, although I haven't tried much. Anyway, you could possibly try an alternative to traditional painting, like I did. You can try a photo editing program and do some things on it. By learning a few tricks before starting, you may produce at least one piece you can be satisfied with, and eventually you will end up discovering something new every time you use the programs. I always recommend Paint.Net and the GIMP, because they are powerful and free. Most of what I've done so far has been through a combination of both. I know it's not like proper sketching and painting because the program automates much of the process, yet there are many things you still have to do on your own, making digital art the closest you can get to proper fine arts when you lack the skills required for wielding a brush or pencil.

Do you doubt it, or have you tried?
And thanks for the tip :)... I might check it out. I'd still prefer if I could do it on paper, but this might be a way to let out my creativity. Sometimes I feel like I have a lot of it bottled up inside, and writing is not enough... I've also been meaning to take up photography, but that can be an expensive hobby.

I've tried some sketching, but I don't like the outcome very much. Then again, I haven't tried really hard, mostly due to lack of time. I'm hoping that one day I can try really hard and see what happens then.

I feel something similar. It's like I had many things piled up inside and developed a graphical need to let them out. I've never been really graphical until just recently, and ever since I started I feel a little more relaxed. It's a sort of therapy, I think.

And all that matters is that you keep trying. Trust me, that's the most important part. When I started back more than four years ago, I sucked really bad. But I kept trying. You can do. But just don't give up. Like my challenge, the first one look like crap...but with each one, I got a little better. (minus one or two) I have faith you can do it! :D

Picasso said: 'Every child is an artist - the trick is to remember to be one when you're an adult' (a child he meant)
It's fun Beau - it's totally calming down and tapping into your inner daydreamer and translating it into whatever you want. You don't have to make yourself do it (or anything), but in answer to both you and Max, there's no trying harder about it, if anything it's trying less - ignoring all the rubbish in the world like what's this person doing, what's that one? What's on the news? Who's going to win Survivor? Forgetting all the electronic stimulation of the internet for a few hours and filling it with something satisfying instead.
If you don't have time for whatever reason, you only have to bother about it when you do. And as I've said you soon make time - the thing is you find you have to make time for the normal essential nothings which become meaningless after awhile.
Shopping? It becomes a few wasted hours in the day to think about what you're going to try next. The beach because it's too hot for anything else? A few more wasted hours, but you'll be ready for a new challenge when you get home.
I keep a small notebook with me so I can write and sketch ideas when I'm away from the work area (when they come - sometimes nothing for days), and it's because of them that I've tried different things. Without them I might be closer to a traditional sketch artist/illustrator.
I need the big challenges, and I want to see the big ideas in reality - out of my head into the real world where others can see them (and buy them so I can afford to do more). But also I like the materials - creamy black paint fresh from the tube sends shivers up my spine. Rich turquoise, vermilion and cadmium yellow and I get easily lost in lush possibilities. They're just such fun to mess around with. Even titanium white, which is the most light reflective surface known, gets to me.
With Bryce and Photoshop stuff, I don't actually spend much time fiddling with the program. I have the idea first and then try to work out the quickest most effective way to do it, and on the way it may be improved with a better idea or colour palette.
But the main thing is it's fun, has to be, and the farthest thing from work I can imagine :)
Anyway, I enjoyed no #7, even the Cyclops :) which brings me to a final point: Scott Adams said, "Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep." which is cool because it's sort of true - you're doing something that hasn't actually been done before, so of course you're going to make mistakes.
Making mistakes is the point, the fun, they're the important bit. But they have to be your own. Whatever you do, do it for yourself first and foremost, and only if you're happy enough to show it, then show it.
(I didn't realise how long this was - it's quite long)

Why you bored Beau? Because there's so much to do? :)
I'm at a bit of a loss - I was working on stonewall textures to fit a couple of castle ruins - but they still don't look right even after hours of fiddling. On their own (just as textures) I'm happy, but they won't apply properly to complex shapes, making everything look splodgy grey. So I'll have to get back when I've worked it out...

On their own (just as textures) I'm happy, but they won't apply properly to complex shapes, making everything look splodgy grey. So I'll have to get back when I've worked it out...
I've been feeling like that. For example, I can barely decide which colors and shapes are more satisfactory, so I come up with a choice and just try to live with it

Thanks Varenne, but are you sure about wanting to visit them? I try to create places that scare me (actually my inner child - I used to have these waking nightmares when I was really little about horrible dead places, lifeless toy-like and people-less landscapes). On a few occasions I was taken to places that were actually creepy and frightening, and some dreams became muddled with reality. There was a new suburb being created somewhere and the roads were wet dirt (I didn't know they'd eventually be paved) inside the house we visited was all hard edge horror and the adults were blah blahing. I went out into the street alone. It was cold and treeless. There was this eerie high whistling wind like ghosts speaking. I've never heard anything like it since except in nightmares. That and other strange memories haunt me to this day.
Sorry - I seem to be in a yabbery mood :)

I think both are pretty awesome, as well as the above fractal piece. I once rendered foliage by means of a Mandelbrot fractal. Then there's the Fern fractal, for rendering... ferns :)

Thankyou Beau. You're right about possibilities - I'm often caught up in the same dilemma. Do I put effort into this over that, or which is the more worthwhile endeavor? Then perhaps I'll just play this computer game for a few hours and let the subconscious process do the work? (Actually that's not bad advice - doing something unrelated is a good source of creativity. Yesterday I was at the fridge and noticed a puple stain - a tin of overturned beetroot. My first thought was 'grunting slime' for some reason, and I had a lightbulb moment for a poem. Then when I hit the Web to check it for originality my search brought me to a Litnet member).

Thankyou Varenne :)
They're diamond spheres - the most refractive substance there is, thus the internal reflection inverting the surrounding scene. Also thus why I'm doing it again: because they're reflecting too much white grey sky for my liking - but I went for milky sky to even out the colour and texture of the ground. I've a better solution now. The other thing is in reducing the image and jpg size you also lose a lot of the sparkle - so you'll have to imagine how sparkly they actually are

I agree with Gilliatt and Varenne. The diamond spheres look dead wonderful, both in isolation and along with the mountain landscape that reminds me of Mount Doom in The Lord of the Rings, which I think is a great resemblance http://smiles.kolobok.us/standart/ok.gif

The original image is a transparent PNG, which is my fave format since I began working with images. However, the file came out rather big, even after passing it through OptiPNG optimization, so I decided to place the elements in a JPG backgrounded with the same color as Lit Net's background to achieve a transparent appearance, thus saving some of my photobucket account's bandwidth for other uploads.

Actually I realised what you'd done - I often save interesting smilies and avatars thinking that one day I'll get to use them. Right click 'save as' sometimes gives a descriptive name, and I instinctively did it to see if it was a png, but it was a jpg and for a second my brain went how... ..?
Click!
Clever nonetheless, but why don't you have an unlimited Photobucket account? They gave me one without even asking shortly after I signed up.
Anyway - yeah, thanks, space scenes are easiest and quickest of the lot, though they went curly there because I thought: 'Right - new technique - perhaps best not wear it out all once...' So it's a program that only makes curly models, almost any twisty twirly shape that you can think of kind of shape, and it was a lot of fun at about 1 am this morning :)

No Max, the program is called Spiralizer and I found it on a link when I was searching for a grass generator, and I found a few, but none quite what I was after - though I did stumble across an ivy generator called Ivy which 'grows' ivy on objects (literally). Though I confess I haven't used it properly yet because it can take some time to grow depending on how much ivy you'd like, (and is just like watching ivy grow). But I have a few models that can only benefit from the treatment.

Thanks Max - it was more the result of a last minute change to a texture on something and it'd been rendering all night (really twisted glass shapes, but I changed a main texture without doing a test run - and it didn't work! Took ten hours to render too, and now it'll take more to edit than it's worth. Tonight I render all over again I guess)
Yes - New Zealand's Bay of Islands the inspiration for this one. There are photos on the Net, but I'm yet to see one that does it justice - it's one of those places that can't really be captured in a single image (nor even a video actually), but to fish on a dinghy at night with an esky full of coldies - ah that's the life!

A reminder of a first attempt to create an exospheric sunrise and a view of Earth from outer space, finished and posted on 5/25/2011:
http://i1005.photobucket.com/albums/af178/maxicastro/My%20General%20Artwork/Sundown.jpg
A new attempt after following Mystyr's comments on the above mentioned piece. I tried to give realism to the areas first hit by the lights of dawn, as well as to the shades in places still at night. The scattered little white glows in night areas are intended to represent electric lighting. Does it look any different from/better than the older work?:
http://i1005.photobucket.com/albums/af178/maxicastro/My%20General%20Artwork/Sunrise20new20sample.jpg
This is the same Earth as above posted, but without dawn glows, night lights and shades, clouds and sun, mostly intended to highlight terrain irregularities as might be seen from outer space. Again, does it look any real?:

That's a vast improvement Max. Not just realistically but aesthetically: understatement usually works better - definitely in this case.
As to your first question I haven't gotten around to it yet, but I did discover why the rendering took so long - I multi-replicated early on and because I didn't use it I forgot. So each glassy object was in fact twenty glassy objects stacked on top of each other. Just two glass objects occupying the same space produce a sort of obsidian texture, imagine twenty. So that's why I was disappointed, not in the texture itself but a pretty bland effect, (and the time it took)

I have a quadcore doozy - though Bryce2 still worked on my ancient Pentium 100 mhz 16 mg ram under Win95, and version 7 hasn't changed all that much really, a few more bells and whistles but a lot of the problems with the original still remain (like loading the entire texture presets into ram, not routing to the graphics card, losing focus periodically.
The only thing with multi-cores in 3D is the basic speed increase - two cores take half as long, four a quarter, and that's a blessing when anti-aliasing decides it's going to take hours (often I don't bother with it and just increase the dimensions by a pixel, and then reduce the dimensions by the same pixel - depends on the picture though). It'd still work on something that isn't a complete breadbox with a brick in it ;)

So here's one I've given color....again. I'm telling you, this is the second time I've colored this piece. Same lines, different colors.

Cool Beau - though they're both perfectly acceptable because they look like two different seasons/times of day. The first looks Wuthering Heightsy, and the second Midsummer Night's Dreamy (or something).
Good stuff :)
I think I've almost finished the glassy objects, just tinkering with the composition. Watch this space!

I suppose a multi-core may do something for me, and more RAM too. I'm presently using Paint.Net and GIMP, more or less extensively, and after adding some plug-ins and brushes I have noticed they are becoming a little sluggish, especially with multilayer projects above 1024 x 768 pixels.

I agree with Mystyr's comment Beau. I was going to say something similar. The first has the feel of a winter scene and the second appears to be set in spring or summer. They convey different meanings. If you look carefully, they both have their own attractiveness :)

Good song Revolte, when's the album coming out?
Now Max, I have a lot on my plate lately and completely forgot about this, and also the size reduction looks considerably worse than usual for some reason - these are actually particularly sparkly objects at native resolution, so you've been warned (the reason why it took so long to reset the scene is because something was happening to make everything really clunky - why is unknown to me - I'd move an object and it would take a minute to reveal that I had actually moved it, by which time I'd moved it again out of shot. Actually it may have had something to do with the other six billion polygons - anyway eventually I gave up trying to reproduce the other exactly [not even approximately] and just went ahead and rendered)

Why thank you Max, and Mystyr! I still think the blue one is better, but if you guys like both, then who am I to argue? They were both supposed to be a winter scene, but the one with the purple background was the first time I experimented with snow in my pictures...hence, the lack of snow. I'm glad they have their own attractiveness!
Mystyr: How long does it take for you to finish one of those?

Beau - in a sense they're never finished, but honestly it depends on factors like how adventurous my mood, whether I've remembered to save a similar scene for simple rearrangement or starting from scratch (which is often easier than trying to remember what it was called), whether it begins complex and then reduced to the fundamentals or vice versa, or just even how obsessive I feel that day.
I try not to make lots of images that are too similar nor even which look like I did them all at once (fiddling with the sky controls is great for that). Rendering time depends on how many and complex are the objects, which isn't a problem because I'll plump for simple primitives over a model download - like a castle is just four cylinders, four cones and four blocks, which can look more effective than something someone's devoted 6 months to and trying to sell for 3 hundred better spents.
So it comes down to the textures probably being the biggest time waster - choosing from the many (factory and my own) presets, fiddling, and then discovering it's actually not my computer's friend. Now the Deep Texture Editor is another story, in there you can create textures as complicated as you like, and spend hours exploring, sort of like breaking down time and jumping from nano-second to nano-second - it's another world in there.
So the answer in a nutshell is anything from less than a minute to hours (though I do have scenes from months ago that aren't completed yet). But the thing is the more time you're prepared to devote the faster the process becomes as your personal bank of scenes structures skies and textures grows. The ones on this page from start to completed render, are about half an hour, about twenty minutes, and about an hour respectively.
Looking at Fireflies - first the idea, then the number of trees?, their placement?, grass texture?, how to create the bugs?, what sky?, put a moon in the background?, secondary lights? - took twenty-thirty minutes, render took a minute - voila! Now I can change the sky, number, placement, grass, etc and have Fireflies, II, III, IV, to a thousand or a million if they sell.
(Whoopsy - doin' it again!)

3D art seems to have several whims in itself, but it's pretty sure you'll keep figuring things out Mr. Myst... it's like you have the thing in the palm of your hands, as everything looks better time and time again. I have a weakness for trees and grass, and might as well go 3D-picnicking :)

These works of yours are a lot more elaborate than what I've seen so far in plastic bottles, Var. The material beneath can't be told and all that can be seen is the resulting art, whereas in other works I've seen the plastic bottles are quite noticeable. You've just earned one +10/10

In my slowly growing collection of collage works, first one featuring Charlotte Wessels (frontwoman of Delain (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcK2w0YhrBc)), and first work featuring a brand new logo (the little thing down the bottom right corner intended as sort of a signature). Unsure of how to call the resulting aspect, I think it somehow resembles a set of burns on a reddish background... maybe similar to a pyrograph?:

Very interesting outer space plushies, Varenne. Plushy Yoda would be in high demand I'd think if you could make enough of him.
Max has been creating intense collages - I agree the hair dragons are something else. Strange effect coming from her eye. I think you may be better off with a more subtle X-shaped burst centered just on the highlight - only if it's realism you're after though, like this:

I ran into a curious mutation called Fishmiley. It seems the mutation came as a surprise, judging by the expression in the poor creature's face, which made me think it would feel a tad better in a fishbowl. I'm interested in knowing if it looks real enough, especially the bubbles and water environment. I intended the fishbowl as one made of light blue glass:

Ultimately the spheres will become half cylinders or elongated blocks all locked together the grass a city and the hill perhaps mountains. When I get time. Cool sky though, huh?
Mutated fish in light blue fish bowl good, but I think the fish needs to preserve its original colour (sorry if I seem to be critical lately, just aspects of my life are causing me to be). Can you take the cut out original and place it over the one in the bowl (after you copy the two slightly obscuring bubbles) possibly. Also the table: meh - a mantelpiece with objects on it though... :)

It looks like it could do with some more misty clouds over to the higher peak and obscurit a bit. The water looks cool, but I'm with you on the wood, looks a bit cardboardy . Perhaps if you reduced the white highlights, bringing it forward by darkening possibly, or changing the angle, or both?

~ Some humble new creations ~
I created the following out of applying a polar inversion with certain settings to a certain basic shape, which rendered the face and ears. Eyes and mouth were out of the application of math-formula-based effects:

Is she a bit self-portraity? Can't say I've seen a platinum blonde fairy before Varenne. And life-size too (for a fairy I mean - not Tussaud's). Quite amazing in the detail department. The weave and stitching on the clothes is fine enough to not look out of place.

It is partially a secret. I make beads/crystals/water drops from start to finish by layering glazes. The eyes are more complex and contain multiple materials. They start out as balls of clay. :)

Varenne,
I love the fairy sculpture. Is it tricky baking it? Certain temperature/time? Very talented!
Thank you, Tony! The baking process can be tricky. Overbaking creates scorch marks, underbaking can cause cracks. I bake these at about 270 degrees fahrenheit. 30 minutes per quarter inch thickness. Then a cooling time in the oven. Going from hot to cool too fast will definitely crack them. I also have to bake them on soft cotton pads to maintain their shape.
The great thing about polymer clay is that it can be baked in a home oven. I have a second oven anyway because I don't want to have to clean out art residue every time I go to bake food. Eventually I plan to get a kiln so I can make porcelain ball jointed figures and great big things.
The other big pro to polymer clay is that it stays pliable and workable until it's baked. I'm usually shaping a piece for four to eight ten hour days. :)

This is the 22nd version of this thing, and I think I've finally got it right (though it's subject to change). Credit goes to gt3232 for the model, but I did design the water and weather. I wanted more than it just drifting through the mist - trying to achieve a realistic angle placement on the Flying Dutchman has proven to be the hardest part, though no doubt building the model myself would have been still more difficult.

I have been experimenting with bullets and came up with a few variations to be used in future projects. I think some of them are close to real bullets, though the 50 cal ones (the two long bullets at the bottom) turned out less shiny than I would like... probably the last one at the bottom-right corner looks better, though still a bit spotty... I wouldn't really mind the spots if they looked shinier. I'm not fully satisfied

During ongoing experimentations I discovered I was using Paint.Net's Shape 3D plug-in rather wrongly, especially the lighting feature. Today I came up with what I think to be a more realistic 50 cal bullet. I will post it soon, and in the meantime I will go pick a few targets! :p :D

Since I've been building a fleet I decided it was best to open my own space agency business :p
Everything was done on Paint.Net, throughout several days experimenting with textures and the splendid Shape 3D plug-in (whose very many capabilities hadn't been thoroughly explored till then).
Planet textures come from a combination of the clouds and heightmap effects, being the latter the evil effect that gives a texture a coarse elevated appearance. Then the Shape 3D thing renders the textures onto a sphere through various lighting and angle adjustments.
Spaceships follow a similar process. Their metal skins can be done in several ways. A stained metal surface can be achieved through the clouds effect, then applying a motion blur to give it a groovy look, and finally adjusting colors. A more polished metal skin can be done through a multigradient turned into B&W, then picking a suitable color. Once the basic texture is ready, every part of the spaceship needs to be done separately due to the Shape 3D plug-in limitations (it can only render simple 3D objects like spheres, boxes, cylinders, bullet-like cylinders, all their half-section variants, and other less conventional shapes). Fortunately this plug-in allows to load/save settings. I had to create different settings for every wing, fin, rocket, and whatever part, then calculate angles, lighting position, final position of the finished part when assembled to the other parts, and so on. It's been time consuming and it's surely inferior to what one can achieve on a 3D modeling software, but curiosity led to explore the possibilities of the Shape 3D plug-in, and to discover that a plethora of shapes comes out of it depending on how it's used.
Bullets were the first results from the Shape 3D thing, which later gave birth to the spaceships, and to three missile models for a space battle scene that will be depicted on the forthcoming episode.
I'm hoping everything looks reasonably realistic http://smiles.kolobok.us/standart/scratch_one-s_head.gif

Since it's been a minute since I've posted anything, here's one I've done in the past...month? I've actually been writing lately, and I'm on a small art block, but I'm working slowly but surely through it. This piece actually took the longest on the line art. The coloring was quite easy. :) Can you guess who this is supposed to be?

I went to a fabric store and explained to the lady that I wanted to make a "Velveteen" rabbit. She proceeded to tell me that there are much better fabrics to make a bunny out of than velveteen. What she wasn't getting was that if I didn't make it out of velveteen, then it wouldn't be a "VELVETEEN RABBIT".
Well? What can you do?
(Yes, I bought actual velveteen, and it worked out just fine.)

Here's something I'm working on. It's not done yet, but this is how far I've gotten. It's actually supposed to be me9even though it doesn't look like me). The present me(right) is looking back at the me six months ago(left). While the six-months ago me, is looking to the future, wondering how it'll turn out. One of those things coming form too much thinking...especially since I keep thinking, "What if I had done something different?" Would I be how I am? *sigh* Too much thinking.

Too much thinking may be right Beau, but what a great idea and execution! The raw black and white linework and vast blank distance between the figures that really gives it impact.
Can't comment on Bien's, because they aren't displaying AT ALL! (Though the problem is probably at my end as usual)
I'm revisiting a favorite old program, but the intervening years have made it either very dodgy, or I remember it being a lot better than it actually was. Either way I'll keep hammering away until I get some results I'm happy with...

We would tamely walk headlong into the night
Could we not remember dusks that yelled through white,
And only hear The Banshees' endless wailing,
Rebuffing angers' will for promptly sailing.
But today no lung knows restful breathing,
Neither shall there be a single hate at sheathing;
Today's the finest day for The Impaling.
Even through the shields completely shattered
Shall emerge a ram with gates to batter.
On a day when bells once loud no longer ding,
When throats ere voiced announce we cannot sing,
In the wake of The Unveiled by mist unknown,
It shall, that day, be day for wrath to spring;
To fling the rocks, the sheath, the blade, the hone.
And thus, through choking drafts, above, alone
A race restrings each severed string
And tunes regain their utmost tone.
