This thread has gained a new life. Everything is so cute that it should be impossible to pick one piece

This one is drawn by someone else, but I colored it. :)
That's a very nicely done coloring, Beaut. I haven't forgotten the coloring I owe you. I've been busy lately, but hopefully I might have it for next week :)

Following a tutorial on flower making on Paint.Net, I came up with the next four pieces (the one with the yellow center is a little variation of the exact instructions given on the tutorial, and the other ones are the results of my own experiments):

http://i1005.photobucket.com/albums/af178/maxicastro/My%20General%20Artwork/FourDigitalFlowers.jpg

Then I took it a little further, I experimented with several effects and tricks, and I designed a humble present for my friend Beautifull:

http://i1005.photobucket.com/albums/af178/maxicastro/My%20General%20Artwork/apresentformyfriendBeautifull.jpg

I suppose they are all abstract flowers. I'm not sure whether any of them resembles a real flower :p

At Max - Bryce was ace, it was trying to compress it into youtube format using third party free downloads - . The original is high def and looks great, but the free stuff for afterfiddling is not so great (maybe it is - just wouldn't work for me :( I'm not a tech head and that was the hardest most confusing and boring waste of time ever)

In the end I loaded the final 350mb movie into Moviemaker 1, and played with the filesize regardless of quality, randomly choosing to squash it down to 21mb for reasonable length of time upload

The original quality is much better - those diamond textures are spectacular - as is everything else but what can you do? (and there's also this nonsense about square pixels and rectangle pixels, and it's all too complicated) but at a certain point I just wantd to upload it and be dammed

Now though, I've discovered that youtube has things called tags which resize and reshape the video, and I'm also realising this gibberish is as bad as the gibberish I had to suffer night after night

Glad you all enjoyed it :)

Working with videos is a whole subject, regardless of the tools you use. People who master the field spend long hours trying different frames per second, resolution, sound quality and whatnot. 350 mb is a decent size for good quality, although it's quite huge to be uploaded. To sum up, whatever you did, it turned out in a good balance of size/quality. Good job, Mystyr

You're right there Max - my mistake was believing that the whole thing could be understood by someone, namely me, who isn't interested in it (at least that side of it) in the first place. I became increasingly convinced that there must be some ultimate free program that did it all automagically - and Moviemaker (2.1 actually - the version that came with xp) has its own limitations if you're working with aspect ratios that it wasn't designed to handle (i.e. most of them)

And the truth is to do it properly is to invest in something like Adobe Premier and learn to use it

But having said that - I don't want anyone to be put off video editing if that's your bag, but if you want to keep it simple and use what you've already got and if you're having problems with youtube remember to use these tags

yt:stretch=4:3 or yt:stretch=16:9

there's also yt:quality=high

which is self explanatory

Also about 10mb per minute is the golden mean

:driving:

How many songs? Who knows, a lot. There are only a few I play these days, I do try and switch my set lists up a bit between shows though, so I'm usually working on something new.

Interesting Beautifull, yet another unexpected thing on the web

Steph - Should we be worried about you? I just realised that deep in your heart, barely visible, there's a jigsaw puzzle with two pieces missing/in the wrong spot, clever, if outside my experience - you'll have to explain it to me sometime

This is something completely different. Though normally steering clear of reality in the renders I thought I'd try a different tack - trees and rocks in a flood plain. I animated it as well for a virtual boat ride, but the whole video will be a while a way I'm afraid. Anyway:

Thankyou Beautifull

Bringles are field painting/drawings that you can't quite tell if they're black on white or white on black, or red on blue etc

Here's a landscape using a couple with the black rendered as transparent (and yes I'm rendering an animation as I type)

Apologies for the intromission, but I just realized Mystyr's comment on not being able to create a transparent background, so I took the liberty to pick Beau's coloring work and gave it a transparent background and a little darker tone (yeah, I know I'm a dark man), but I keep the version with the original tones in case this one doesn't look pleasing:

Cool Weltanschaaung - Purples! Eyes! Flames!

I tried that Max, but nothing's perfect - and in the case of Bryce, well, apart from the frequent crashes, it loads png's only as shapes without detail

I'll get there - I have to change the white to black

Maximilianus
04-02-2011, 01:35 AM
How bad :( It should load pngs properly, since it's a very established format now. I hope you find a solution, Mystyr.

This reminded me - the other day for lunch I found myself accidentally watching The View. They had a visiting art expert explaining why Andy Warhol's painting of Elizabeth Taylor was worth so much (because the artist has carked it) but also went into why blank canvas art (white on white, black on black) can command such high prices - what a scam!!! *chokes on coffee in a fit of jealousy*

Doing a little test I come to the conclusion that it must be a photobucket issue. Maybe they cut down the viewing bandwidth for big files, though I never thought that a one megabyte animation would be that big for them. What bugs me much is that you can't see the complete version. I wish I could show it somehow :( My work that took me a day has been mutilated http://smilies-gifs.com/emoticonos-grandes/6grandes.gifhttp://i1005.photobucket.com/albums/af178/maxicastro/Smileys/words_2.gif?t=1287886047

I actually draw pretty well, but I dont exhibit to the public. Sorry. I dont like fame and compliments, not like I'm tearing myself down. I just dont, k? When you show something that you love, like a song or a book, or a drawing, you cant really think about it, which is what makes it good. Then the value is diminished. The persons voice will drive you up a wall. But if you are close enough to someone, it is still rock. But if the person is loud, rowdy, and that stuff, it will ruin it's serenity. If the person even likes to talk, it does in general. The quieter the nature, the better.
:icon_bs:

Maximilianus
05-16-2011, 08:20 PM
Well, I agree it's a personal decision whether to show or not to show. As an alternative, you could possibly contemplate your work for a while until you have thought of it for long enough, until you're sure of what it means to you, and then you could maybe show it and see what others think. Just an alternative. Still a very personal choice.

I don't think I'll ever be a great artist myself. I just try to do a few things every now and then in order to check if I have some possibility to do this or that. I suppose history shall judge me, if ever

Maximilianus
05-16-2011, 11:37 PM
You cannot do a direct upload here. First you'll need to upload the file on an image server like Photobucket or Imageshack, and then you have to paste here the link you get there (between the and tags).

Back to my morph animation, I discovered that right-clicking on it and then clicking on "Save image as" should save the whole file to disk, so I'm guessing miss Beaut might want to do so if she wants to have the full animation without glitches and mutilations :)

Interesting Max - it, and I refer to the still image, doesn't look 'real' in the sense of a photo from the stratosphere, but it doesn't matter because it has its own unique quality of representation, had I not known of the manipulation I would still have doubted the authenticity

This is to do with the background stars more than the image, though the clouds give it away also - they're too large - the reason the Earth looks like a marble is because of the filigree patterns

But it's still as fine as any graphic I've seen

Like the gif too

I like these Steph - that first one has such a cool textured layered multi-dimensional quality I find it hard to stop looking at it - it's like an intriguing visual poem

The heart looks excellent (I love the hand-drawn look - not a stylised squat wingding and it says something much stronger for that), The fronds around the heart look great - I wouldn't mind seeing that effect go on further and fading away - but at the same time I like the way you don't mind having a large area of bordering background, where my inclination would be to closely crop the central element, you set it in its own space

And you've done it with the multi-dimensional butterfly too, giving it space to flutter its wings and fly

Good show Steph!

I thank you both, Beau and Mystyr. I have been planning to do something more accurate with the earth, following previous Mystyr's advice on filigree patterns and such, but school and other chores won't let me do it soon, apparently.

Abstract art is very challenging, because it's very hard to determine whatever may lie beneath the splatters, splashes, strokes and the like. Your abstraction calls for a thorough stare, Mystyr. There must be something in it to be found :)

Following is a ring I made to cheer up my friend Mari Jo when she was grieving. Not saying it's the ring, but it is the closest to a ring that I've been able to come up with so far:

I agree with Max on what he said about the abstract art. I believe Your piece, Mystyr, reminds me of a celebration...just the vibrant colors....but I don't know, I'm not good at reading abstract art. All I know is that's it's pretty amazing. I can't do abstract.

As for your ring Max, It's nice. You're always so thoughtful. And it's a pretty good ring if you ask me!

Thankyou Beau and Max (like the ring, and the lettering extrusion too)

Kyriakos' Civ III, things are cool - I lost quite some hours to that game (and many more to II and IV, though haven't tried V yet)

This is the product of an accident where I really wasn't happy with the way the painting was turning out and frustratedly painted over the canvas in gloss black. Well, I couldn't leave it at that because I was determined to have completed something by dinner time - enter blue, silver, and white squiggly amoeba things

(The orange isn't for sense of scale, but to help hold it flat because it had been rolled up and paint gets quite rigid in Winter)

I think coloring has a lot of merit. It's not easy to choose what colors fit on what place, and even if it were, it's not easy to fill the various spaces. I like it very much! http://smiles.kolobok.us/standart/ok.gif

You dislike sci fi? I hope that doesn't mean you've missed out on Dark Crusade and/or Soulstorm? They are both so good they are Art. (Fortunately they're still available, and play on modest systems, if you're ever in the mood - highly recommended). Keep up the good work in the meantime!

You didn't say how much you liked my fingerpainting :(

That's good Beaut. (I gave up on Wacom, though is Bamboo the program not the tool?) It definitely looks like a depiction of a recognisable human face

Why do you preface with "you know I'm not the best artist'?

That's my criticism - all art is just doing the best you can do with the amount of time you have available, and the so-called 'great' artists are merely people who have decided to allow themselves to have that time - usually, but not necessarily, to the point they arrive at becoming professional.

Taking the case of Van Gogh say, he was a dedicated amateur who only sold one painting! And what bargains they would have been!

If you like something enough you'll find yourself the time - and remember, it's not about showing off as much as developing, one of the reasons that artists are rarely happy with their work: I'm never happy with anything I do, but why spoil the mood of the thread by saying 'here's something I've done, but these are the faults a1 - z26'?

Also nothing photographs properly - you can never get the sense of scale from a jpg, which is why I don't mention the dimensions, and regardless the impact is completely different - everything handpainted I've submitted I'm doubly/triply etc unhappy with, know I'll be unhappy beforehand, but do it anyway just because...

Keep doing it Beautifull (Promise me!) :)

Oh, I LOVED your fingerpainting Mystyr! Reminds me of ketchup and mustard...maybe it's because I'm hungry....But I've always loved your stuff. It's always so artistic.

But I think Bamboo is a type of wacom...Still confused about that) But I'm glad it at least resembles a person...

Well, now that you have said your say, I'm ashamed to say it was just "something". Of course, I'm just anxious and impatient to reach that point where I do see my own improvements. Maybe I should go find my dust folder of drawing from four years ago, and show myself where I've come from. And of course, I promise I'll keep it up. I promise! I pinky swear~!

Thanks Mystyry for your words of wisdom, and your concern for my lack of concern. :D

I was looking through some random pages of this thread and...wow! You're all so talented! Painting (or any other kind of visual art actually) was always the thing I wished I could do. But alas, it was also the thing that I never had the hand for. All I ever did was doodling around with words, which always involved more scribbling than drawing... :leaving:
Failing to create images worth a sight, I drifted off more toward sounds... I wish there were any thread here for songs that are sung/played/composed by LitNetters. I'm amateur (in every sense of the word) but passionate about singing, and I wish I could hear others in here too. :)

I've been many times told that talent is more a matter of pushing than a matter of inborn abilities. I would like to believe there's some truth in that, because the opposite feels more painful.

And if you are doing music you can upload it on Youtube, and then post a link here. Revolte is one of the litnetters who is a musician and sometimes he has posted his Youtube links on this very thread. Go back a few pages and you will find his material :)

That's so cool! I always wished I could play a guitar (never happened somehow). But I could only ever play my voice. I wrote a song once for a show and then lost it after the show was over. And writing another one didn't happen either, somehow. *Sigh*
So now I just sing songs that I like once in a while. Some of them I upload in youtube too, although without any music. But I think I might start another thread for sharing my songs and others', seeing that I almost missed your ones in here.

Thanks Max for pointing out Revolte's songs in this thread. I didnt think we had more than visual art in here. I always admired LitNet for its talented and warm members. Mutatis-Mutandis
09-13-2011, 09:36 PM
Hey Mystyr -- I really like your pen and ink abstract pieces. Kind of reminds me of what I *attempt* to do (and it's given me some ideas). A couple questions, though: Do you start with a pencil sketch, or just start with pen? How big are the ones you posted? How do you get your lines so smooth? Do you use a certain kind of pen? It seems no matter how slow I go, how careful, I always get bumpy-ish lines. I thought yours were done with a computer, also, just by how smooth they are. Your solid black areas seem so smooth too--you can't see any pen strokes or anything.

MystyrMystyry
09-13-2011, 11:18 PM
Thankyou again Bella Beautifull :) (You needn't be jealous: I need a holiday - I'm jealous of people who get to have holidays)

Thanks Mutatis. So many questions...

Let's see - No pencil sketch, just pen.

They're about 2 x 1 1/2' - 3 x 2' on medium paper (about twice as thick as photocopy)

Lines are smooth by being very relaxed and with a good pen - a free flowing fountain pen with quite broad tip, and the ink is just water based black Quink. The finished result photographed under as neutral light as possible (virtually impossible to get flat lighting unfortunately, which is why some of the edge lines are faded/broken or too heavy after the next step)

Then I load the black on grey photo into paint.net, turn the contrast up about full (not the brightness) til it's sheer black on white. (Airbrush out some of the grits that remain - which I neglected in the bottom left corner above)

Finally I reduce the size to the smallest reasonable that you can still perceive the detail, and then compress it 50% jpg (gifs look too clinical), and voila!

So: good pen, good paper, good music, relax (preferably all at once)

(Actually there is another step - my camera has a copy function which reduces text and line art to a close black and white high contrast, but it doesn't work completely)

Thanks Max for pointing out Revolte's songs in this thread. I didnt think we had more than visual art in here. I always admired LitNet for its talented and warm members. Although I havent been as regular myself in sharing things, all you guys have kept me returning to LitNet to simply spend time with things you share, things I like...
Welcome :) Like you said, it might be better to have a specific sound art thread. This one has many pictures and the sounds may get confused :p

Thanks for the tips!

No worries. Also the black areas are a fine sable brush fill. I use one with about four strands to about ten, going over it 2-3 times (once doesn't dry velvety black, but grey-brown)

Now you should be equipped to post something!

The following piece I have baptized as "birth of the fire doves"

http://i1005.photobucket.com/albums/af178/maxicastro/My%20General%20Artwork/Fire20Doves202.jpg

Next was done experimenting with a few brushes and lighting effects on occasion of a friend's recent birthday.

http://i1005.photobucket.com/albums/af178/maxicastro/My%20General%20Artwork/Floral20para20Mari20completo.jpg

And finally a collage I came up with after finding a few promotional photos on Spartacus, Blood and Sand (one of my fave TV shows) that gave me some ideas. I suppose it may be perceived as a tribute to the late Andy Whitfield (R.I.P.), because I don't do collages very frequently... but I just felt like doing it after realizing the many possibilities of fading and lighting that result from the combination of Paint.Net and the GIMP. I also removed some of the backgrounds and added the glares and a few blood stains.

Well done Kyriakos! I like the landscape effect - you'll have to explain how that was achieved

Good work Maxi - I like the first mostest, and the way it has a cool title too (evocative at that!) - the other two look are quite fine also, with the second being an accomplished greeting card thing (you could make money from similar renderings easy) crossed with a desktop wallpaper. The last is total fan wallpaper, and well-executed at that, but it could also adorn tee shirts or the side of a van, a billboard or a mural!

Thanks, Mystyr, I'll consider everything you said http://smiles.kolobok.us/personal/hi.gif (come to think of it, I could use some greeting card extra income :p)

For the following piece I first developed a cobblestone texture, and then I placed it under a wavy water animation, entitled as "waves on a mossy cobblestone floor." I'm just hoping it looks like the real thing.

It certainly looks real, or sort of from a game.

I feel when animated gifs get toward the 1/5 meg size it's a bit elaborate. At one hundred kilobytes I'm already looking at video as being a much better ratio - at least for uploading - and I know it's probably not feasible to embed a youtube/vimeo video. I think I tried once, though I may have stuffed up by not knowing what I was doing (highly likely!). I've seen it on other forums - perhaps I should check the construct of the page next time.

Keep 'em coming! :) I'm enjoying the holiday ;)

I love all of them maxi! They're awesome! I agree with Mystyr about them. I think the first is cool, awesome title and all. The second is so cute with the flowers, and the third...wow. I think I liked that one. And I could see it on T-shirts and whatnot! :p Great job on those three!

I also really liked the waves on a mossy cobblestone floor. I could stare at it for hours just because it's so...hm....alluring? I don't know. All I know is I like staring at it. By the way, what program do you use? I'm sure you mentioned it before, but I don't remember(excuse this old mind of mine)

True. In general, the bigger the gif the higher the quality but it's also imperative to consider carefully the program you're going to use to generate the gif, because many such programs do not really produce a high visual quality, especially considering that gifs can't go over 256 colors and if you were working with images higher than 256 colors, then the program has to reduce the number of colors in reasonably good equivalents (or the animation will look glitchy in many parts). For this reason I'm mostly using GIMP to produce animated gifs. It has a very good method for color reduction :)
Regarding videos, I'm afraid that all you can do here is posting external links and nothing else :(

Keep 'em coming! :) I'm enjoying the holiday ;)
I'll make some more in a while!

It does have a similar effect on me. I'm using it as visual therapy :p

I did the cobblestone texture on Paint.Net, by following this very cool tutorial (http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/20121-make-a-stone-texture/)
However, you can vary some settings as you are on it, and of course before following the tutorial you need to get familiar with the program's basics, such as installing plug-ins, but that's easy (this tutorial uses 3 of them). It's a simple yet powerful program and there's a bunch of cool plug-ins available here (http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/forum/7-plugins-publishing-only/). You'll never stop producing new visual effects by touching all sorts of settings :)

As for the wavy water animation, I did it on GIMP, through its built-in wavy water plug-in, which I learned to use by following a video tutorial on Youtube that has been unfortunately removed :( Luckily, I downloaded the video when it was still available, so if you want it I can e-mail it to you. It's not very big and explains in detail how to use the wavy water plug-in. I had to experiment with the settings for a long while though :p That depends on what you want to achieve.

Beau, I wouldn't know how to define what you do. I think you are an admirable artist. Every time you try something new it feels like you are getting even better, if such a thing is possible. If you don't mind, I'd like to use some of your sketches as models and see if I can remotely imitate them :p Of course without taking credit.
