"an old western or a modern thriller?": tough choice. I'm old enough to remember the allure of the old westerns, but I do like an intelligent thriller as long as it's not a kill-the-kiddies/slasher flick slanting toward the Sci-Fi genre. That being said prolly modern thriller my choice.

Martial arts movies (currently watching Ong Bak 2... ) or movies best known for car chases and the ilk ?
bounty
03-11-2023, 12:07 PM
nooo, that cant be tailor. they have ~70 best sellers between them over the past 30-40 years, and over 20 movies made from their books with gene hackman, Julia Roberts, tom cruise, Samuel L Jackson, Sandra bullock, dustin Hoffman, etc.
a fun thing about car chase movies is looking for ways to make them unique.
I recently watched and enjoyed mad max: fury road which was pretty much a "car chase" the entire movie!
that's a fun question from a definition perspective. can a "martial arts" movie be one in which the main character merely uses martial arts (like a lot of the steven segal movies)? or do martial arts have to be a fundamental and integral part of the story?
I think either way though id lean towards the martial arts movies. so then the question becomes...!

its been a long time since ive seen either, but i have a vague memory of liking bloodsport better. plus its based on the true story of a fellow named frank dux, who had made a big splash in the martial arts world.
im a little bit young to have grown up with bob Dylan in his hay day, and i didn't become a big fan afterwards, like i did the beatles for instance. however, even though i have some Dylan Thomas, ive not read him yet. a slight edge for Dylan Thomas because of raging against the dying of the light, although ironically i understand his own death was very unlike the poem.

03-16-2023, 06:46 AM
I get a station in my tv package that often has music biographies on it, AXS I think. maybe i'll come across a bob Dylan one someday.
I like to watch jeopardy and every so often they'll have some category like "before and after" where one part of the answer flows into the next part of the answer and the clue is some clever description of both ends, often times the ends are fairly and comically disparate but in this case we'd end up with "who is bob Dylan Thomas?"
how does minimalism intersect with non-rhyming poetry?
its interesting how some elements of fashion are consistent with personality. I could not for the life of me see myself wearing cowboy boots. some people i could see wearing them, others not. there's also a geographical bent to some things also. cowboy boots in the south seem okay, in the north they seem weird and all the more so in the urban/suburban north.
for me and mine id take running shoes all day long---unless youre a cutie from texas and we're going out square dancing.

I like baseball as a sport lots better than basketball, and spring training is the renewing part of James earl jones famous quote "baseball has marked the time..." but, even though its not too many steps below soccer hooliganism and i think we care about sports too much, i appreciate the student and alumni spirit that comes with march madness. its a larger, and seems to be, a more important cultural phenomena. so lets go with that one. heck, by way of illustrating, because i spent some time in school at Tennessee, i watched the last few minutes of, and enjoyed, their beating duke.

that's a toughie. major Winchester was my favorite character on M*A*S*H and one of the reasons was because not just his love of classical music, but also by how moved he was by it. so id be looking at which one created the most or better emotional response and I think they both can do an excellent job of that.
if im not allowed to say "tie" even though im trying somewhat badly to teach myself the recorder right now, I say slight edge to the strings---maybe in part because I really enjoyed the movie if I stay where the main character, played by chloe moretz, was a cellist, and I loved that part of the movie.

I used to be a big fan of the reality show on cbs, survivor. glad to see you here danik, I hope you'll end up enjoying it and staying.
im about on equal footing on a symphony vs an opera. if opera's were in English, or I understood a foreign language, that would go a long ways towards liking them better. but then as danik stated, it depends on the symphony too. some foreign operas might be more enjoyable than a symphony that doesn't quite cut it.
flavor wise id go for butter, but im a vegetarian who tries to minimize dairy products whenever there are acceptable alternatives, so 99 times out of a hundred, its margarine.

I was riding my bike one summer in the loire valley in france, came around a curve in the road upon a large field of sunflowers with all their heads turned to the sun. it was beautiful. similar occurrence in Holland except with tulips.
but I had an ex gf in the answer to the question of "what kind of flower would he be"---say, "a dandelion." plus I love their feisty tenacity and since they are unfortunately much maligned as a "weed" to be gotten rid of, their underdog status too. so I have to go with them.
a lot of poetry's lost on me danik---I have a really good collection of poets' works, but I hardly ever make use of them. I suspect if I had someone in my real life who enjoyed poetry, id get more into it.
I watch a fair amount of dvds on my computer while im riding my bike. the noise from the bike is loud enough that i'll usually have the subtitle function on for the movie. I enjoy being able to read what im hearing. I don't have any sense of missing out on the viewing of the action.

Margaret's interesting because her character evolved through a few different stages and became more likeable as the series progressed but there's a line from colonel blake that gives the answer: "hawkeye pierce, warts and all, is kinda the heart and soul of this unit" (or something very much like that). hawkeye was essential to the show so ya gotta go with him. plus I never found Margaret, "hot lips" and all, desirable like so many characters throughout the show did. major Winchester was my favorite character. ironically though, i thought the show as a whole went downhill starting probably in the early 80s.

its interesting to me how people's interests fall into various and distinct nooks and crannies. I watch jeopardy often and this past week was shocked when the contestants failed at half of the questions about the lord of the rings.
i notice there are lots of back to back episodes of stargate on a network called "comet." how did you become a fan and whats good about it?
I remember the very first long hard bike ride I took with a more experienced rider. I lived in a 3rd floor apartment and could barely make it up the stairs. I went back down, got in my car and drove to the nearby mr. donut, bought a baker's dozen and I think ate maybe 6 of them right then. its hard to beat fat and sugar and also when it comes in such a large variety of forms.
but that said, id go with bagels. I love bread, and bagels are both a part of that family and a great alternative to traditional sliced loaf bread.

Babylon 5 is a tv-watching point of contention on big bang theory. leonard likes it and Sheldon doesn't. ive never seen an episode but their quibbling over it has tempted me a little bit.
i love star trek, and even if i had seen Babylon 5, there's a good chance id still say deep space 9. ive got a few more episodes to watch in season five and then alas, only two more seasons to go. but ive been stretching them out pretty well, plus ive got season two of picard to watch, a few more episodes of season two of lower decks (both of which i really recommend). probably when i finish ds9 i'll start interlibrary loaning voyager.

Trelane or Q ?
bounty
04-09-2023, 06:57 AM
whats the premise of the show? and what sorta kinda drives the stories?
I never really liked jadzia's romance with worf but I like her relationship with captain sisco and how well she handled being the near constant object of men's advances.
seems like I read somewhere that the trelane episode and Q were retroactively linked---as opposed to Q having been inspired by trelane.
id say Q, the trelane episode was a good one but among other things, Q enjoyed repeat occurrences that allowed for relationship building. I thought the final episode of next gen was great and I loved the episode where he turned the crew into robin hood and his merry men. the two funniest scenes ever in that series came from that episode---one where worf says "captain, I protest, I am NOT a merry man!" and then geordi accidently shoots data in the chest with an arrow. oh wait---the scene in another Q episode (where he loses his powers and gets them back) where he puts cigars into picard's and riker's mouths and has a mariachi band on the bridge is hysterical.
I know Q appeared on voyager a time or three but im not remembering him from anything (yet) on ds9, although I suspect he was.

We made contact with spacefaring aliens who gave us advance technology to reach the stars, Gate Technology, then we goofed up and started a war inadvertently with the Minbari who were on the brink of our genocide when they surrendered for a reason that is later revealed:
The opening theme for Babylon 5, Season 1, stereo in the mp3 format.

It's goal to prevent another war by creating a place where humans and aliens could work out their differences peacefully. It's a port of call. Home away from home for diplomas, hustlers, entrepreneurs, and wanders. Humans and aliens wrap in two million five hundred thousand tons of spinning metal, all alone in the night. It can be a dangerous place, but it's our last best hope for peace. This is the story of last of the Babylon stations. The year is 2258. lower decks is pretty nifty---the story is told mostly from the perspective of four ensigns who don't serve on the bridge, mariner, boimler, tendi and Rutherford. there are bunches of star trek "easter eggs," species you recognize, cameo visits, frequent references to other famous and beloved character and a great deal of both reverence and irreverence.

ive read somewhere that its considered insulting to the chef to salt food that's been prepared for you but I wonder how true that is. the only prepared meal type thing in life I ever really put salt on is mashed potatoes so the sample size is realllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllly small. if someone served me mashed potatoes, and I couldn't see any pepper on them, id assume there wasn't any salt either and id go ahead and add some. if I could see pepper, id assume salt was there too and give 'em a try to see if a bit more was desirable.
there is a local pizza place that, although I haven't been in a long time, when I do i'll often puts lots of garlic salt on the pizza.
lately ive been making lots of pasta and oil dishes and have been playing with all sorts of different oils and spices and other flavorings. ive got 3-4 different kinds of seasoned salt that ive been adding to those (but if someone served that to me id eat it without salt). as much as I like salt, the best thing on the pasta has been brown sugar.

hmm, the question really might be which one is used to better effect in the movies.
jar jar is comically likeable but his presence in the movies was pretty debate-able. crumb is loathsome and his presence in the movie didn't seem controversial. in short, I think people could say jar jar detracted from star wars and shouldn't have been written into it, while crumb, nasty as he is, was in keeping with a desirable rendering of the whole jabba scene. gotta go with him.

so many different perspectives from which to approach the question, but since we're in a literature forum, i'll default to that, and go with
gone with the wind. I just recently got ahold of a dvd collection; alas the movie itself is missing but in one of the dvd's they have an interview with clark gable, that's just proceeded by the fanfare associated with the screening of the movie. heck it was so boisterous it almost looked like the end of WWII.
the wizard of oz might have been a better movie than gone with the wind (I don't know) but its one of the those book/movie pairs where the movie is better than the book. I liked the book, but it doesn't have the same epic grandeur im associating with gone with the wind.
id enjoy reading a book on the manhattan project if I ever come across one.
Hewlett-packard---wish someone in my family would have bought stock!

Lol, had forgotten tinker toys. Also had an erector set that saw sparse use. Like most of my childhood my toys never seemed to survive from one move to another. I've only seen bits in the sandlot and the lego scene doesn't seem to ring a bell... lego movies haven't made their debut with me yet.
Salad. I would stalk the salad bars meticulously and with heartiness, and then only if the soup was one I liked would I have but one bowl ~ partial to the creamy soups :)

im from western ny, south of buffalo, where supposedly the chicken wing was invented, late high school/early college years, so they were a pretty ubiquitous part of our eating out. plus they go great with blue cheese, the sauce is tasty, they always came with carrots and celery, which was fun. id have to go with them.

if you played baseball as a kid tailor, or even just had a group of friends you regularly hung out and played with, its an utterly fantastic movie. there is a lot that the movie is about, but one of the things that drives the plot is that they have hit a baseball over the fence at the sandlot, into a yard guarded by "the beast" and they have to get the ball back.
I should have given you an "in the middle" option---that's kinda where my dressing goes too.
if I put the croutons on before the dressing, they slide off! the dressing gives them something to hold them in place.
what, no garbanzo beans??

i'll drink plain water if im out and about from the occasional fountain or bottled water in the middle of working if im otherwise unprepared, but at home my water has an unpleasant mineral taste to it so I use little packets of flavoring. right now ive got a half gallon of "lemonade" and a half gallon of "blazin' blueberry" in the fridge.

jadzia dax or ezri dax?
tailor STATELY
02-18-2024, 11:59 PM
I prolly will continue to vacillate on this choice:
• Intellectually Ezri is the most experienced, having Jadzia's "experiences", et al, plus her own.
• Jadzia was the original cast in DS9 and thus it's difficult to overcome the attachment to an original character, especially over several episodes/seasons
• Ezri more the diplomat perhaps
• Jadzia more sure of herself

Thanos is a much better (super) villain... yesterday I found a list of the most powerful MCU universe beings and I was surprised at how low he ranked: https://www.bustle.com/entertainment/most-powerful-marvel-characters, albeit much higher in other lists. Vader might have been better if he were not redeemed IMHO.
Basheer or Quark ?
bounty
02-22-2024, 06:32 PM
besides vader's redemption, what was it about thanos that makes you rate him higher?
that's a toughie. one of the fun things about star trek in general and maybe DS9 in particular is the exposure to difference species and stories associated with them. the ferengi are fascinating and I think the show did a good job of occasional ventures into them and their culture. quark was a good character.
but then so was dr bashir, and I really liked him. and since he was in star fleet and was able to be worked into the stories better, I gotta go with him. im nearing the end of the series and im wondering if he and ezri are going to get connected. she was just about to tell him she loved him but he was distracted by his work trying to find a cure for odo that he missed it and she didn't get a chance to explain.

We have/had? Shasta in Cali... haven't had one in ages, but then my consumption of soda is very-very small. There used to be a Shasta plant/distribution in Hayward, California one would pass nearby going from the East S.F. Bay to the West S.F. Bay on one of the many bay bridges.
Tomatoes
Ok, soft drinks seemed to be favored over board games...
Regular Checkers or chess ?

one wonders the connection between shasta the soda pop and mt shasta.
I think theres lots of fuzziness in the choices based on the soda and board games in question---tempered by the presence or absence of playing partners. id be willing to give up most kinds of pop in order to regularly play a large handful of board games.
I think if im playing by myself, chess; if im playing with another person, checkers.
and into the first bout of the vegetable quarter finals----squash vs cauliflower?

re: fuzzy... ah, I see.
Difficult choice... go with cauliflower. My daughter says she uses cauliflower rice instead of normal rice... haven't tried it yet.
When playing board games alone: Yahtzee or chess ? (or, if you deem Yahtzee not a board game Risk in its place)

that was interesting---a mt shasta and shasta soda pop connection, and I see faygo was mentioned in the article too. along the lines of the latters red pop, it seems I vaguely remember the formers version too.
rice with cauliflower sounds good.
I recently had some pasta made from corn and rice---it had a noticeably different texture. I didn't dislike it, but I didn't prefer it either.
im on only child, I actually used to play board games by myself sometimes as a kid---ive never played risk alone, but you hit the mother lode on that one tailor, it might be my favorite board game. but I suspect it would lose a lot of its appeal playing by myself (have never tried), so maybe chess is indeed the winner.
carrots vs brussels sprouts?

No... not rice with Cauliflower, though that does sound good, but riced cauliflower (my bad)... https://www.walmart.com/ip/Great-Value-Frozen-Riced-Cauliflower-12-oz-Frozen/279573553?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&wl13=2468&adid=22222222277279573553_117755028669_12420145346&wmlspartner=wmtlabs&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=501107745824&wl4=pla-306310554666&wl5=9032342&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=local&wl12=279573553&wl13=2468&veh=sem_LIA&gclsrc=aw.ds&&adid=22222222237279573553_117755028669_12420145346&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=501107745824&wl4=pla-306310554666&wl5=9032342&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=local&wl12=279573553&veh=sem&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw_qexBhCoARIsAFgBlesZne0TPeOumf93Nh5w YSbMnPXC1DUheiY8ovu0-eHo9zYyKOUkBOEaAkyCEALw_wcB
Go with Brussels Sprouts :)
Monopoly or Backgammon ?

ah, that might be like the cauliflower version of "spaghetti squash"
I like them both, but edge towards monopoly. I have a couple variants of the game id love to try sometime, I think one might be an nfl version.
and now, entering the vegetable octagon, two giants from the green world---asparagus vs broccoli!

Asparagus hands down... it spargels !!! The San Joaquin Asparagus Festival (Stockton, California) was a few weeks ago :)
Othello (the board game) or Backgammon ?

asparagus in a quick victory!
did you partake in the festival?
there is a nearby village here that has a somewhat famous garlic festival every year but ive never gone. maybe this year...
backgammon
in the last quarter final bout of the tournament, another couple of vegetable giants----tomatoes vs peppers!

i think if asparagus wins the tournament tailor, going to the festival has to be on your bucket list!
I recently inherited a couple of cans of asparagus. have you ever had it on pizza?
that's a tougher one---but monopoly. although I like the movie battleship.

Asparagus festival has been on my list for some time :) On pizza? mais non. My idea of toppings is prolly the antithesis of what you have in mind... and hopefully counterbalances those pesky carbohydrates with my fantasy all meat pizza (sans fishies) :)
Brussels sprouts
Stratego or Monopoly ?
bounty

the expiration date on the cans is 2026, and I don't have a problem eating canned food for 2-3 afterwards, so ive got a good 4-5 yrs to figure out how to eat it.
how about asparagus and rice?
hmmm, I like stratego a lot, but still monopoly.
and in the bottom half of the vegetable final four----the aforementioned asparagus against the very popular perennial all-star, tomatoes!

Golf or Frisbee golf ?
bounty

oh that's a good idea, I like that. I just bought bunches of crackers too so I need to eat those up before they go stale. maybe I wont wait 5 yrs and i'll give it a shot in the next few days. i'll let you know.
I used to really like miniature golf, but that has suffered from the same fate as board games, no one to play with. ive only genuinely golfed once in my lifetime, despite growing up in the neighborhood of the local country club. apparently you have to belong to the club to use the course, go figure!
frisbee golf it is! I was at a park once somewhere playing, NC maybe, where they had a formal course and enjoyed that. more successful technique, less slicing and hooking and missed balls and no divots.
a surprise winner, moving on to the finals but first, the consolation match between:
tomatoes vs cauliflower.

... tough one: Tomatoes are in soooo many things; they're like the Leatherman of vegetables... going with tomatoes :)
Leatherman multi-tool or Swiss Army knife ?
bounty
05-05-2024, 06:06 AM
that's a good point---I suspect tomatoes are king when it comes to their versatility.
I have both. I think if I were going to be on an episode of mountain men id go with the Leatherman, otherwise, my nifty little swiss army does the trick. I make pretty good use of the can opener.
and in the vegetable finals, two surprising upstarts who have defeated some of the heavyweight favorites, asparagus vs brussels sprouts!

congratulations to asparagus!
you might enjoy hearing over the weekend I tried the canned asparagus in some cream of celery soup and it worked really well.
oh that's a fun one. I like both a lot, but im going to go with thrift stores not just because of their inventory size, but because they are often engaged in charitable work.
okay---I think on to the 3rd this or that march madness inspired tournament---fruit or condiments or desserts soda pop or old tv shows?

Knife... one could only hope :)
Soup... glad to hear :)
Agree with charitable work. Perused two thrift stores recently. One that supports Hospice Care is where I made my 3-purchases: Bowling Ball with finger grip inserts that perfectly fit my hand for $6.99 (plugged & redrilled a few times, but modern stock), an iridescent Anchor dish that I will employ for microwaving soups, and a book on American poetry about 5-ladybugs thick.
Old TV shows :)

we just had a local garage sale weekend and so traffic was baaaaaaaad.
im a smidgen too young to have grown up with burns and allen but I do remember watching dick van dyke as a kid, so he wins by forfeit.
ive been struggling to figure out how to organize the contestants tailor. there are sooooooooo many shows to chose from. maybe we can make this particular "this or that" the answer to the question.
would you prefer one large bracket with shows from the 50s through the 80s mingled together? or four smaller distinct homogenous regional tournaments?
in the latter case then we could end up with the winner from the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s playing in the final four.

my mother was a big fan of I love lucy when I was little, so I have fond memories of it.

alright tailor---it took me hours to create, after much research, having to resort to high end online tournament making software, we have a 32 team bracket with three preliminary pigs tails!
for some brevity sake I had to leave out allllll sorts of goodies. I did make an effort to have a relatively even distribution of shows from each decade, 50s-80s, and to have each decade face each other a relatively equal amount of times.
oh boy! looking forward to it!
in the first prelim, bonanza vs gunsmoke.

Lol !!!... sounds like March Madness in May... or as Father Mulcahy of M.A.S.H. might say: Bracketology!, Bracketology!
I've watched a few episodes of Gunsmoke recently with my wife at her sister's house (they have Direct TV). I really prefer Matt Dillon's character over ___ Cartright... here's a bio of James Arness: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Arness. An aside: As "the Thing" he brought more depth to life than that of the character in The Addams' Family... (not referring to Lurch).

good memory tailor---jocularity! jocularity!
hard to beat the bonanza theme music though. how did the gunsmoke episodes hold up after so many years?
ah---im sorry, being the tournament administrator im not allowed to answer that for fear of swaying the outcome! although ironically I left Hogan's heroes out. I say that because im watching and really enjoying that very show these days. I should start over and make a 64 team bracket!

difficult to pass on Jeannie given her outfit!
ah that's a fun one---lady bugs are cute and adorable and butterflies are beautiful and delightful. i'll go with the latter by virtue of their visibility.
the last pig tail:
the cosby show vs all in the family.
