Eaten by a shark or eaten by a Komodo dragon?

Shark I think.

Eaten by a bear or pack of wolves?

Pompey Bum
06-23-2016, 05:57 PM
Good choice. Komodo dragons bite you with saliva that gives you botulism and follow you around until you weaken and stumble (in intense agony). Then they rip you limb from limb.

A bear and hopefully a polar bear because you know they're having a hell of a time.

Eaten by ants or death from radiation poisoning?

Added: I'm amazed Danik hasn't said neither by now. :)

Clopin
06-23-2016, 06:16 PM
Radiation poisoning because I could choose to kill myself. If that's against the spirit of the question then I think it's still radiation poisoning. Slower, but I believe less gruesome, though I've never died from it or suffered from it. I would have more time to say goodbye to my friends and family as well.

Kombucha or Coconut oil, as a miracle cure all.

Pompey Bum

Coconut oil because: 1) it smells like the beach when I was 16 (or was that cocobutter?) and 2) I don't have the slightest idea what kombucha is. Is it coconut oil?

The beach when you were 16 or the woods when you were 10?

Anyway woods for sure. My grandparents lived off the grid on Lasqueti island (I grew up on Vancouver island, if you know anything about that area) and it's still my favourite place. I've ever exactly had a 'beach bod' either, or really liked parties/fun in general.

Being burnt alive for a deep personal conviction or accidentally falling into a giant meat grinder?

Clopin
06-23-2016, 07:37 PM
Meat grinder for sure. I'm very afraid of pain and I don't care much about people on earth benefiting from my convictions. I wouldn't burn to death for anything I believe under any circumstance if I could help it. I'd keep my mouth shut.

Edit: Actually I'll amend this. I'd burn to death before murdering a bunch of innocent people or something, but if I'm asked to put my signature on something that I know for sure is untrue, and the punishment for declining is being burnt alive? Yeh I'm signing whatever it is.

Same question.

Pompey Bum
06-23-2016, 08:02 PM
If it was for my wife (that is, in her place) I'd burn. Otherwise I'd refuse to sign and take the Roman way out. Nobody's burning me if I have a choice.

Well that's what I meant! Right now I think I'm leaning towards just being done, but I have a lot of life to live so my views might change. Okay but my final answer is reincarnation because, even though I'm leaning towards oblivion right now, I'm still young and will probably change my mind.

Not even a question for me: country, all the way. Beauty, quiet, fresh air, and no freaking PEOPLE! ;-) Also I'm from NYC and have had my fill of cities for one lifetime. Of course, many New Yorkers wouldn't dream of living anywhere else.

bounty, I was out there in the Grand Tetons as a lad, did some whitewater rafting and such. The fact that Grand Tetons means big tits was and remains highly significant to me. Working at home or at an office?

bounty
07-04-2016, 06:15 PM
that's a toughie---pros and cons to both but the choice between the two would be consistent on the type of work one wants to be doing. for the most part, for me, coaching/teaching requires an office. universities like it when you show up and a few "office hours" per week just don't seem to get the job done. smiles...

but the nice thing about working at home is there's no one telling you "get out!"

so danik, specifically for you since youre down there, but applicable for anyone who might want---you get to go to the Olympics, do you spend the day at gymnastics or track & field?

Danik 2016
07-04-2016, 07:47 PM
That's interesting, bounty, I too have been a teacher or lecturer most part of my life.

I'll probably disapoint you, bounty, but I donīt like sport. However I am going to start to do something in that line, gymnastic aided by those strange modern devices, because of medical orders.
As for the Olympics, I would be very happy if they happened in some other country. Brazil in in the midst of the greatest corruption scandal of its history. The state of Rio de Janeiro, where most of the games will take place, has declared financial failure at the beginning of the month, there isnīt even money to pay its civil servants and the retired people.
I wouldnīt advise anyone I knew to come to Brazil to watch the games!
Water sports or ball games?

bounty
07-11-2016, 11:03 AM
yes the games in rio are already controversial and many people are critical of them.

in theory and in some practice, the awarding of the games to any particular city and the subsequent changes that happen to the place as the facilities are built, and the game occur, are beneficial to the host city in particular and to the world at large in general.

theres sometimes talk over the years of making 3-4 permanent sites for the games and to use them on a rotating basis. this offsets the tremendous cost of them as well as assures some sort of continual use of the facilities. many from prior games have fallen into disrepair and are not used.

I like both--either playing or watching im thinking the question's maybe too broad for me to narrow down to a definitive answer. id rather go canoeing, or white water rafting than say, play basketball. but id rather play kickball than swim laps or play water polo. synchronized swimming and diving is fun to watch, but I don't want to do them. leading a water exercise class or teaching kids to swim is fantastic, but then so is teaching tennis and I enjoy watching some of the grand slam events when they are on.

I think id go with slight edge to ball games though on this condition---thatd id have someone to do them with regularly and that they be something new to me---like cricket, or better yet, team handball.

somewhat vigilante/romantic stories like zorro and robin hood, or whodunits like Agatha Christie?

Danik 2016
07-11-2016, 11:29 AM
Rio de Janeiro was formerly a favourite destiny for international tourism, specially on Carnival. But what happens this time is that the whole state is severelly in debt to the union because of the general corruption. Anyway the games canīt be avoided any more, so letīs hope for the best.
I hope you have time to practise your favorite sports, bounty.

Romantic or realistic literature?

bounty
12-10-2016, 10:41 PM
well I am going to make at least a minimal attempt here to rescue one of my favorite games from the abyss.

you might have to elaborate a bit on "romantic" danik, because im sure I don't want to equate it with romances.

meanwhile, I can at least say dickens, cooper and Stevenson are a few of my favorite old authors, and if what they write is "realistic literature", im going with that one!

.....bad connection

Danik 2016
12-11-2016, 12:22 PM
I didnīt watch either. Usually the original version is the best

You did well to ask, bounty. I donīt think it is that easy to define and distinguish "romantic" and "realistic" literature. It depends on the literary tradition of a certain country which on its turn depends on this countries experience view of the world.

"Romantic" literature is more subjective, emphasising the feelings sometimes to the extreme and there often is room for the supernatural. I believe, Frankenstein, Wuthering Heights and even Jane Eyre are considered romantic novels plus all the novels by Walter Scott, while the novels by Anne Brontë are considered realistic. In US I think Edgar Allan Poe is considered one of the great romantic references.
Realistic literature relies more on objective observation and accuracy of details. Its intention is to depict life "as it is" as closely as possible. But their are great diferences. For example, the French realism of Stendhal, Balzac and Flaubert, ground on a very negative view of man and society. I remember being impressed by a detail when reading Father Goriot-the dying old man was so exploited by every one, that even the cat lapped the cream off his milk.

Dickens is considered a realist too, but it is quite a different kind of realism. Dickens believed in the possibility of changing persons and instituitions for the better. For me his stories are an interesting mixture of realistic depiction of environment and instituitions and fairy tale characters.
Here is a bit more about romanticism:

novels or short stories?

bounty
12-11-2016, 03:42 PM
interesting you say "the originals are usually better" because in x-men, the "first class" movie are the back stories of the "originals"---they pre-date the originals in the story line, so in a peculiar sense, they can be considered the originals.

well that makes the choice tougher---im a big fan of Frankenstein, the three musketeers, the hunchback of notre dame and Dracula for instance.

how about one one day, and the other the next day!

ah, thankfully a no-brainer. novels over short stories, although short stories are indeed enjoyable. I read a bunch by hawthorne I liked last year. typically I don't read them though.

With "originals" I mean the first movie(s) that were produced first. Iīm not thinking of the story line. If the first product is a success they tend to make sequels to the story and/or previous story but the quality may not be the same.

You neednīt make a choice at all. I didnīt want to complicate but it is always dangerous to encorage a favorite subject. ;)

i love the first class movies, but my favorite of all the x-men movies, is x-men first class: days of future past.

the movie combines elements from both time periods in it.

john carter is the main character in the martian tales. a movie was made a few years ago, called "john carter," combining elements from more than one book. I liked it, but a lot of hardcore john carter fans were critical of it.

i might lean slightly towards the martian tales but maybe the next tarzan book i read will swing me back the other way.

peanuts for sure...though my favorite cartoon strips are bloom county, the far side, calvin & hobbes, dennis the menace and foxtrot.

Summer vacations or winter vacations?

ive spents tons of time either in college, or working at them, so "vacations" were both summer and winter.

did the florida spring break thing a couple of times during undergrad, so there is (was?) something appealing about escaping the cold and snow and enjoying the warmth and sunshine. on the whole though, especially as im not really involved in winter sports and the allure of sunshine destinations waned with age, id lean towards a summer vacation.

most poems are lost on me. I wonder if id take a bad book over good poetry? (if you go with either of the first two choices, who's your favorite(s)?)

Fables or true animal stories for children?

I think that in terms of directing, Goodfellas it's a greater masterpiece than The Godfather. The way of shooting the scenes, the construction of the storyline, the soundtrack, etc. it's superior. But we have to understand that Goodfellas was released in 1990... The Godfather dates back to 1972. The resources at Coppola's disposal were completely different, archaic even. Marlon Brando had to put cotton in his mouth to talk that way, which say's everything about what they had at their disposal. With the technology and the recourses available in 1972, what Coppola did was outstanding, memorable.

But concerning the overall, The Godfather was superior, in my opinion. Powerful dialogues, powerful scenes, the raw description of the underworld, the incredible and fascinating interpretations, the majestic suggestions that were made threw out the entire movie... it's incredible how most of the information that is important in the movie it's implied, implicit. Either you pay a lot of attention to the movie, or you don't understand most of what's happening. And that's one of the things that makes The Godfather one of the most brilliant movies of all time, and superior to Goodfellas. So, although i like Goodfellas very much, i prefer The Godfather, and i think it's considerably superior.

Concerning to your question, i prefer fables.

You see, that's how they do you in California - you think there's an LA, you've always heard about it, you may have even been there, seen it with your own eyes, but pull back the curtain and AH-HAH, it doesn't really exist. It's all smoke and mirrors. If you ask me, I think Hollywood is somehow involved.

In all seriousness, when I think of NYC I think of Manhattan, Brooklyn, The Bronx, (and sometimes Staten Island). I can see it, smell it, hear it, taste it. But when I think of LA, I don't know what I'm thinking of - Wilshire Blvd? Sepulveda? The 405? The 10? That's it! Voila! I'm on to something here! LA is just a huge car park. It goes from San Burdoo to the coast, and probably from San Diego to Santa Barbara. It's yuge. I can't wrap my mind around it. Either it's too big or my brain is too small (or both).

That said, San Francisco is a real place.

Bo-Sox.

Only because a few of years ago, on a hot summer night, with a couple of good friends, I had the opportunity to go to Fenway and watch Anaheim squeak one out against Boston. It was a weeknight in late summer and the Sox were last in their division, meaning the game didn't mean Jack, but the place was packed. We sat in the grandstands next to a huge Mexican dude who was wearing an equally huge, bright-red t-shirt emblazoned with an Angel's A. Needless to say we got pelted with peanuts for 9 innings. Great fun. Boston is a great baseball town.

Bounty, old friend, I can't believe In my earlier post I left out Queens. Home of the Mets. Natural enemies of the Braves (my team). What was I thinking? Anyway, I knew my question was an impossible one, and you navigated it superbly, although I believe both those books can be good for the soul.

I like both styles, but i'll go with the novels focused on the characters. I enjoy a novel that reflect's on human nature, our behavior, how we deal with certain issues.

City life or country life?

Lendo
01-12-2017, 07:59 AM
Both. The most perfect life is the one in which a person has the possibility of spending time in the city and in the countryside. I live in a city, but i often need a getaway weekend in the countryside. To relax, to be in a quiet place in which i have only my thoughts and my routines. No noise, no busy streets, no cars going up and down the roads, the crouds, etc.
But, if i have to choose one and only one, i would have to choose the city. Even for practical reasons. In a big city, you have everything you need in the range of an avenue.

bounty

I love lyrics and especially songs that tell stories, so its gotta be that one.

although, there are some great instrumental pieces out there that I just love. give moby's "guitar, flute and string" and "everloving" a listen (if you are only up for one, go with the latter).

and who doesn't love mason Williams' "classical gas?"

and oh my, movie soundtracks too! half the tunes from last of the mohicans make me cry.

still---going with music with lyrics.

watching the movie and then reading the book, or reading the book and then watching the movie?

Danik 2016
01-12-2017, 11:51 AM
Usually I prefer reading the book first. The movies are seldon as good as the books that originate them. But today watching has become easier for my eyesight than reading. I guess thatīs why I have become such a soap opera fan.

I don't know enough about directors to have favorites, but I do know that tarantino has a sort of stylism that's unique and comical in a quirky sort of way, so i'll go with him.

1980's movies or 2000's movies?

much more the 2000s. I have this notion that creative story telling has to an extent kept pace with technological advancements in cinema. there were some great movies in the 80s, but I think there are also great movies in the 2000s, and there are more of them, they are better looking, and more innovative.

My wife also had a sheep named, predictably, Baa Baa many years ago... and so many other animal pets. Sheep are tick infested if one doesn't watch closely... I'll go with horses.

if you like horse racing---a couple other ive read and enjoyed: this racing heart, and, three strides before the wire.

Lendo
02-07-2017, 08:29 AM
I can't say. Some of my favourite authors are from those two periods, and i think that both centuries were extremly rich in good authors and works. From the 19th century there's Tolstoi, Eminescu, Eįa de Queiroz, Dostoievski, Victor Hugo... the 20th century had Camus, Gorki, Mário Sá Carneiro, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Mario Vargas Llosa, Bulgakov... it's impossible to choose.

But I am a defender of general questions, Lendo. If one asks questions about one specific country or culture, be it US, Portugal, Brazil or whichever country, the players who are not intimate with that particular culture will not be able of answering the questions and than they lose interest in the game.
