Get in the car and deal with it. Your generation didn't invent sex (even if it invented sexting). Your father knows all about your sex drive and loves you anyway. If he didn't have one, too, you wouldn't even be here. If you did something wrong, then apologizing will help. If not (and it doesn't sound like you did), then just tell him honestly how embarrassed you are about the whole thing. He's probably embarrassed, too. Good luck, Lykren. You're an amazing young man. Apple. And the recorded live music one is big with me, going back, yea, to my youth. Most recorded rock music blows because instead of getting a new album of new songs, you get a live album on which the songs don't sound notably different from the original studio recording, i.e., a total waste. With progressive rock, jazz, blues, fusion and rock that's played by the better rock musicians out there, though, live is everything, mon, everything.

The Emperor had margarine face but a cool voice which I spent ages doing a rather good impression of after Return of the Jedi came out, to the delight and hilarity of my friends. (That's why you should always take me to Tupperware parties.) Also, he's ultimately scarier than Darth, so I think I have to vote Emperor.

Driving an ordinary car as fast as you like, or driving a Lamborghini within the speed limit?
bounty
10-25-2015, 07:40 AM
the interesting thing there is, when im on the highway with no particular hurry, I enjoy driving well under the speed limit, enjoying the scenery, and listening to music. i'll speed up to the limit if there is a car behind me but as soon as they are allowed to pass, i'll slow down and pull over a bit to the right. aggravatingly enough, the majority of cars slow down with me, sometimes agonizingly so (lemmings!), and miss the opportunity to pass, causing me to have to speed back up to the limit until the next passing section arises. usually after the second invitation, they get the idea.
I suppose driving the Lamborghini within the speed limit would be like having a chaperoned lunch date with a nymphomaniac? one would wonder what the point would be. perhaps one gets a sense of the unbridled power, but it seems rather a frustrating tease. so id go with the ordinary car.

And hell yes, the bikini shot is burned indelibly in the minds of three generations of men now. Probably how she got the job, and all she needed. ;-)

Country music...<buries face in hands> Country freakin' music... You had to choose country music... Can we compromise and say bluegrass? I can dig me some o' that, but country... :-0
And I don't think our universe can be infinite, Isabelle, because it started as a single point and has been expanding ever since the Big Bang, of course, so it has to be finite if expanding. However, I am a subscriber to the multiverse theory, which from what I understand is quite plausible, and one could interpret an infinite number of universes as an infinite universe.

tyrion, I suspect given a fondness for literature, an historic and renewed appreciation for the outdoors, you would like country music more than you think. the songs are interesting from a lyrics perspective, and more often than not, they are singing about something traditional of value. the merging of styles, pop with country, rock with country, etc, changed country music from something palatable and sometimes good, to more than good almost all the time.
I wonder if I recommended a handful of country songs to you, if you'd give 'em a try in earnest and see what you think?

I was a high school kid when queen was hitting it big; many of their albums and songs were a happy part of our lives.
I just started a WWII history book, citizen soldiers by Stephen ambrose, and im really enjoying it.
tyrion---how do you have frozen pipes? that is, where is the frozen culprit, whats the source?
im ill-equipped to answer the jazz question, so i'll pass it along:
Jazz from before 1959 or after 1960?
Tyrion Cheddar
01-14-2016, 05:54 PM
Oh, man. The issue here for me is the definition of 'jazz', since there are many styles. If you mean pure jazz, then definitely before 1959. There is no substitute for those early albums by Miles Davis, Coltrane, etc. (long list) But in my life I have been a big fan of music that may sound more modern because of the use of electric guitars and such, and because it is incorporated in with other genres like rock and blues (I'm talking fusion, for example), and that stuff all came later. So mainly, for me, I'm going with post-1960.

that's a toughie, I love raisins, all by themselves, or with big gobs of peanut butter, and they are about the best thing to put on a green salad (after onions and tons of croutons!) but boy its hard to pass up dried apricots, and dates and papaya and apples and whatever else in the dried mix. so slight lean there.

I'm going to say thunderstorm, because although they can be scary, they don't dump five feet of snow on you which buries you alive for some days. Or weeks. Or months, as the case may be.

Comic books, 'cause that has street cred these days--so much that a girl might even think I'm hip. Coins, on the other hand, well that's just one step away from trainspotting.

Marking up your books or no (as in leaving them as pristine as possible) ?
Tyrion Cheddar
02-02-2016, 08:26 PM
I like the cut o' yer jib, there, tailor, as this is one I've been aforetime. It is my inclination, ideally, to take notes when reading a worthwhile book, though not necessarily in the margins of the book, though this was a custom among scholars in years gone by. On the other hand, note taking interrupts the narrative and "pops" one out of that internally focused state in which transcendence takes place. In short, no, I don't take notes, but I heartily approve of it. And more to the point, books are sacred, so leaving pristine appeals to me innately.

The latter, Comedian. I make it a point never to answer the phone, unless it's a family member or a Victoria's Secret model. They can be so bothersome, pestering me in the middle of the night, begging to come over and be comforted. And they're always leaving their lingerie in my sock drawer.

Why can't I snowboard in the tropics? Where there's a will, there's a way. And technically I can't do either. Very technically, as in I'd stand on either and immediately fall over. But ideally I think I'd like to surf.

Holiday/Vacation in Italy or the UK?
Tyrion Cheddar

Dang, son, that's a tough one for me. I have been an Anglophile most of my life. I've been to the UK heaps of times, and love it, so my natural inclination is to go there. On the other hand, a relaxed vacation in Italy with some curvy Italian girls sounds just the ticket right now, so I'm going to opt for that one.

Already sticky. I wrestled with them old-fashioned ones for years and I say sod 'em.
Now, tailor, as a man of esteemed age who watches no reality TV shows and shields himself from almost all pop culture, you're going to have to help me out a bit. What was the connection between bigamy and Serengeti wildlife photography? Was that a pop culture reference, or do men in the Serengeti get to have two wives?

Steak fries or regular ones? This is a big one, 'specially if you're American, so think carefully, lads. And lasses.
North Star
03-21-2016, 02:28 PM
^Traditional, I suppose, although some understated Modernist stuff from the earlier parts of the 20th century is what I'd go for.
Steak fries? Do they have meat in them? I'll have my potatoes with their skin intact.
Ancient Greeks or Ancient Romans?
Tyrion Cheddar
03-21-2016, 03:33 PM
Well, let's see. Greeks invented philosophy and democracy and thought man-boy love was the bees knees. Romans had baths and liked to puke between courses, also had a senate and gladiatorial combat. Also built really good roads and bridges and sewage systems and under their pax romana policy spread such infrastructure hither and yon--forcibly though it may be. I think I'll have to forego the philosophy and bum boys and go Roman. As it were.
Steak fries do not have meat in them. They're a sort of broader, flatter french fry often served with beef at diners in America. I prefer the other kind of fry, myself.
Peace and quiet, alone at home, or excitement and bright lights in town?
North Star
03-21-2016, 04:32 PM
Peace and quiet wins every time.
Hey, you forgot that the Greeks invented theatre, and what would later become science, from geometry and physics to medicine and zoology. And the Olympic games. But yes, the Romans were really great at engineering, and pillaging the inventions of other cultures.
That's pretty much what I expected steak fries to be. If they're both mushy inside, I'd certainly prefer the skinny ones, otherwise I don't know if I'd prefer one over the other.

North Star

Byzantine Empire. That place was a crucial influence on the development of so many cultures, particularly all of Europe (and where the Europeans ended up, too). That said, I don't know much of the Kingdom of Kongo.
No brainer (for me): Beatles.
Good points about the Greeks, North Star, although the sodding Olympics, today's version that is, can gargle with drain cleaner for all I care. Nothing against the athletes, just the politics and corrupt money involved.
Yes, it would be better on many levels if there were no professional athletes, and if the art competitions (epic, lyric, dramatic poetry, town planning, architecture, orchestral music, chamber music, vocal music, oil paints & water colours, engravings and etchings, applied statues, reliefs, medals) still were a part of the Olympics. Then again, I wouldn't mind if the people in those categories were professionals...
Ditto for me on The Beatles.
Ancient (that is, from before they were intimately in contact with Western culture) Japan or China?
Tyrion Cheddar
03-22-2016, 03:59 PM
Somebody better educated on this should probably answer, the only thing I know is that before Edo, Japan was a blood bath. Seven hundred years of non-stop butchery, I believe. Some damn pretty girls, though, but that's true of Chinese girls, too. I don't any more, so I'll leave it there.
That would be nice, wouldn't it, North Star, if the great arts were part of the Olympics, although today the artists and performers would scarcely be judged for their talent or accomplishment, as the judges would be too busy examining the race, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation of the contestants to ever get to their actual abilities.
Meat or vegetables?
North Star
03-22-2016, 05:31 PM
Oh, there was a lot of warfare, and tyranny too, in both China and Japan, that's sure.
Sure, that's how the style points are awarded in ski jumping. But the one who jumps the longest usually wins, nonetheless.
Meat or vegetables - I really wouldn't like to choose, but no matter how much I love eating some good meat like a true carnivore, I do believe I'd rather choose vegetables (and fruit and berries etc), and not just for the obvious health benefits, but I think I would end up being fed up with only eating meat faster.
