Edit: Well obviously the sexy witch.

EDIT: Haven't read Bulgakov OR Goethe!

Sargent or Whistler?

Pompey Bum
04-23-2015, 03:01 PM

Long and short, I like both. It's nice to go back to short hair after it's grown long.

Mahler or Bruckner?

Lykren
04-23-2015, 03:40 PM
Mahlykins. But I rarely listen to either. I do like Mahler 3.

Smiley faces or winky faces?

Clopin
04-23-2015, 03:42 PM
Eh... My hair is sort of thick and curly and doesn't go "long long" very well, kinda fro's out honestly.

Shorter than longer lets say, but I don't love really short hair on myself either.

TV or Video Games (as a time waster, so no educational TV or Videogames)

North Star
04-23-2015, 03:44 PM

TV sucks!

EDIT: Yes the others are too short and don't have sleigh bells. IIRC. Copland.

Bruxism or acne?

Clopin
04-23-2015, 03:49 PM
I've never had bruxism and while I never had serious and horrible acne, I felt marred by three or four pimples pretty much constantly from around fourteen to nineteen and I hated it.

Gonna go with acne though, you only get one set of teeth and acne tends to go away.

Body odour you could never get rid of or forgetting every book you've ever read up until now?

Lykren
04-23-2015, 03:50 PM
I have both problems already.

Pompey Bum
04-24-2015, 08:13 AM
Honestly I don't have the legs for either.

Erectile dysfunction or being chronic obesity?

North Star
04-24-2015, 08:40 AM
If you're chronic obesity, you're much more likely to get erectile dysfunction, and a bunch of other unpleasant conditions, so I'd take just the one.

Pompey Bum
04-24-2015, 08:48 AM
No loyalties.

Lykren
04-24-2015, 10:30 AM

The Colossus of Rhodes no longer exists. Neither does Phidias' Zeus. What are you guys talking about?

Hermes and the Infant Dionysos or The Dying Gaul?

North Star
04-24-2015, 11:21 AM
E: Destroyed monuments, I suppose.
I like them both, can't really say I prefer one over the other, as they're very different statues, the poses in particular.

Italy, no matter how much I may like Mompou, Goya & Velazquez.

France or Germany?

Lykren
04-24-2015, 11:25 AM
Yeah but if, Pompey! If!

The Hermes, and France.

Woah, cloudberries? How poetic, those please.

Spring or fall?

North Star
04-24-2015, 12:17 PM

Spring.

Do cloudberries taste like rain?

I'm more into harpsichord/organ, but maybe Schiff of the two.

Lykren
04-24-2015, 12:45 PM

YT comments, I suppose.

Velazquez or Zurbaran?

Lykren
04-24-2015, 12:56 PM
Velazquez, but dang this is cool (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ef/Francisco_de_Zurbar%C3%A1n_006.jpg), and I had not seen it before. Still, that red pope.

Shakespeare's Julius Caesar or The Tempest?

North Star
04-24-2015, 01:02 PM
And how about the Venetian Water merchant, the Rokeby Venus, Christ Crucified, Las Meninas, the Surrender of Breda. :)

Haven't read them yet.

Ian McKellen's Richard III or Branagh's Henry V?

Pompey Bum
04-24-2015, 01:10 PM
Neither one, really, but at least Branagh's was in period dress.

Prince Hal in Henry IV I & II or his eventual grown up self in Henry V (aka "Hank Cinq")?

Get on it, North Star!

And yes, there are other great Velazquez's I know :)

El Greco or Dali?

Pompey Bum
04-24-2015, 01:18 PM
El Greco. I mean, I get it already, Sal.

Balethquez is a lot of fun, though.

Vanilla or French vanilla?

Lykren
04-24-2015, 01:20 PM
French. It tastes like Proust to me, hahaha.

El Greco for sure, of course.

Balzac

Nuclear power or coal?

Lykren

Nukes.

Tight jeans or wide?

North Star
04-24-2015, 10:07 PM
Not too tight, but not wide either. And yes, nukes for the time being.
Rare or well done beef?

Lykren
04-24-2015, 11:53 PM
Well done.

Reading about royalty or poor people?

North Star
04-25-2015, 12:27 AM
Van Gogh was a poor person, right? ;)
I can't say I'm that interested in reading about either class in general, or of a random rep of the classes.

Reading about painters or composers?

Lykren
04-25-2015, 02:14 AM
Also neither.

Pink lemonade or yellow?

North Star
04-25-2015, 02:21 AM
Pink lemonade or yellow?

Also neither.
Yellow if I must choose one, by a long way.

Sibelius or Shostakovich?

Lykren
04-25-2015, 03:14 AM
Sibelius. Shostakovich's taut angst doesn't do a whole lot for me. Am I being unfair?

Brahms' Clarinet Quintet or Mozart's?

North Star
04-25-2015, 03:29 AM
I think you are a bit unfair, especially to e.g. the Preludes & Fugues, the string quartets, the piano concertos. The melancholia is a part of Russian music in general, and it's not just angst.
But, I too prefer Sibelius.

Brahms

Prokofiev or Bartók?

Pompey Bum
04-26-2015, 09:33 PM
Prokofiev by far.

And definitely pink lemonade.

Popcorn with or without butter?

Lykren

Nachos or calamari?

North Star

Marlowe's 'The Passionate Sheepheard to his Love' or Raleigh's 'The Nimphs Reply to the Sheepheard'?

Clopin
04-27-2015, 09:13 AM
Ah I like both, but I'll go with the original, Marlowe.

Goethe's Faust or Marlowe's Faust or Bulgakov's (kinda) Faust?

Pompey Bum
04-28-2015, 08:09 AM

Impressionistic or Art Deco ?

Pompey Bum
04-29-2015, 11:51 AM

Pompey Bum
04-29-2015, 07:29 PM
Lincoln logs. Tinker toys are for kids!

Plastic dinosaurs or transformers?

Clopin
04-29-2015, 07:38 PM
Transformers of course, and the (animated, not the recent live action ones) movie and T.V shows which were on when I was a kid were awesome.

Pokemon, Digimon or Monster Rancher?

Lykren
04-30-2015, 03:22 PM

I think id have to go slightly with the lisp.

seven of nine or jadzia dax?

Pompey Bum
05-02-2015, 03:50 PM
Seven of Nine. I usually prefer brunettes, but in her case I never really focused on the hair.

Chopsticks or fork (when eating Chinese food?)

bounty

BBQ, but in small quantities.

Baltimore rioters: "thugs" or "misguided young people"?

Clopin
05-03-2015, 04:38 PM
Well some of them are what we could call thugs and some of them aren't. At least this time the police probably actually did the thing they're rioting over, though I haven't followed it as closely as I did Ferguson.

Racial pride parades/days/months, something positive and useful for communities and people or vile racism which should be done away with?

Dark Muse
05-03-2015, 04:50 PM
I don't know if I would call them vile but I am not a fan of them. I do think they serve to put more focus on are differences and some individual will always feel excluded because they don't identify with the group that others try and label them as.

Abstract or Surreal

Pike Bishop
05-03-2015, 06:46 PM
Abstract in painting; both in film

Realism or Naturalism?

Pompey Bum
05-03-2015, 07:47 PM
Abstract or Surreal

Abstract by far. Surrealism is fun, but it's kind of a dumb down.

By the way, I meant "thugs" vs. "misguided youth" in the sense of two media terms being used for the same thing. It was based on hearing a media idiot who originally said "thugs," then "corrected" it to " misguided youth."

Straight ties or bow ties?

the Tasmanian devil or marvin the martian?

Pompey Bum
05-04-2015, 01:02 PM
My favorite WB cartoon character is Elmer Fudd. I know he's not very PC, but I'm still reduced to jello when he cries like a baby because he can't "bwast" Bugs ("WAAAAA-HAAA-HAAA! I'll nebah bwast dat scwewy wabbit!). But given the choice above, I'd probably go with masculine energies of the Tasmanian Devil. Marvin the Martian is too--unpredictable? He's not a "regular guy" in any case.

Bluto or Brutus (as the name for Popeye's main rival)?

bounty
05-04-2015, 06:41 PM
ah you presaged my next question of elmer fudd or Yosemite sam! laughs...

I think the earlier version was bluto and it changed later to brutus. I have to go with brutus because it sounds more nemesis-y. plus bluto is rendered somewhat comical but his namesake played by john belushi in animal house.

Sweet tooth, especially for ice cream. I have to limit myself to only birthdays or things could get ugly.

Going to maximum security prison for life without a chance of parole, or execution (of the two, which would you choose?).

Clopin
05-04-2015, 08:05 PM
Execute me please, i would be eaten alive in prison. Though Assuming it's a prison where I won't be raped, stabbed or beaten by other inmates then of course I would rather go there and just read for the rest of my life.

Should prisons be harsh and punishment oriented or relaxed and oriented on rehabilitation?

Dark Muse
05-04-2015, 08:12 PM
That is a tough one but if I am alive there is always s chance. I could always work on plotting an escape maybe the chance us very slim of it working but not impossible and I could find a way to take my own life if I had enough. So I would say life because that way I can still keep fighting or choose to end my own life.

To me it depends on the crime. I think there are some people who cannot be rehabilitated and some crimes where I think harsh punishment is called for. It should be case by case.

Summer Olympics or Winter Olympics?

Clopin
05-04-2015, 08:14 PM

Do your prefer Booker prize or Pulitzer prize? - in terms of taste.
They're both politically compromised, and the Booker becomes harder to discern since they started allowing American authors, but I've preferred the Booker's shortlists and finalists in the last 20 years. They definitely hit a home run when they gave Banville the prize for The Sea. He's the greatest English/Irish novelist since Woolf and Joyce.

Modern Japanese literature or Latin American literature (20th & 21st century)?

Pompey Bum

I haven't read much modern Japanese literature unless Kazuo Ishiguru counts (which he doesn't really). I've read more Latin American lit, although not nearly enough. I really liked Mario Vargas Llosa's The War at the End of the World, though, which I read in January. So I'll fudge it and say Latin writers, although I really don't know.

Dignified resignation at the approach of death or "do not go gentle"?

bounty
05-07-2015, 08:40 PM
death is the enemy and I think we do everything we can do to fight it, up until the moment where its inevitability is manifest, and then the resignation. in the meanwhile, where there is life there is hope. i also think though, its possible to be dignified in the "everything we can do to fight" camp.

that poem by the way is one of my favorites! i think there is an irony to it though...im not entirely sure but i think Dylan Thomas ultimately didn't live out the precepts from it.

Great paintings should be in (ideally) museums or places of some public access or privately owned? The latter, perhaps(?) encourages and spawns more art and more artists, but it comes at a societal price. More and more great paintings are ending up privately held and museums don't have the budge to compete.

Pike Bishop
05-13-2015, 03:59 PM
I say both for the solid reasons you gave. Painters' labor should have as much access to the free market as any other laborer. However, once it is established a certain artist is a significant part of a country's, or the world's, culture, there should be some requirement for private owners of that culture to share it in a manner benefiting both society and the owner.

I do pay attention to character development, but I want to see that in the context of a plot driven story that involves action.
