Within days of winning Tony Awards for direction and costume design of "The Lion King," Julie Taymor was chosen for two formidable movie ventures: William Shakespeare's "Titus Andronicus" (starring Anthony Hopkins and Jessica Lange) and an update of "The Flying Dutchman" (no actors attached, but obviously a pretext that might reunite Ralph Fiennes with Juliette Binoche or Kristin Scott Thomas).

While it would be churlish to anticipate such prestige projects with anything less than humble gratitude, the appearance of "Cousin Bette," which has lingered on the Fox Searchlight ...
