Shakespeare's Life
The dramatist was born at Stratford-on-Avon in 1564, the third child
(the oldest son) of John and Mary Shakespeare. He must certainly have attended
the grammar school at Stratford, where he learned the "small Latin and less
Greek" that Ben Jonson credited him with. (Jonson, of course, was a giant of
a classicist, and it is really no disparagement of Shakespeare to say that by
comparison with Jonson his classical learning was small ...
