William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-on-Avon in April 1564, the
oldest of four surviving children to John Shakespeare and his wife Mary Arden.
John Shakespeare was a successful merchant who, after holding various minor
municipal positions, was elected bailiff (or mayor) of Stratford in 1568. As
