Novelist Jane Smiley explores father-daughter conflicts and quests for power in 'A Thousand Acres.' As in William Shakespeare's 'King Lear,' the daughters become angry, but their anger is attributed to the abusive actions of their father, not evil natures. Smiley's Goneril figure, Ginny, survives the abuse, confronts it, and is able to transcend her former life.
