BBC Four's GBP30,000 Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction has been won by A Year In The Life of William Shakespeare by James Shapiro.

According to the BBC, Shapiro's book examines the events that inspired the playwright in the year he wrote Henry V.

Other shortlisted authors, all of whom receive prize money of GBP1,000, included Alan Bennett, Tom Judt, Carmen Calil, Tom Reiss and Jerry Brotton.
