The play opens in a room in the palace of King Lear, a legendary ruler of
Britain in the time before Britain became fully Christianized. Two noblemen,
the Earl of Kent and the Earl of Gloucester (pronounced (Glos'ter), are
chatting about court politics. From this gossip we discover that Lear-who we
later learn is about 80 years old-has decided to divide his kingdom and give
