Jaques meets Rosalind in the forest and expresses a desire to become
acquainted with her. Rosalind has heard that Jaques has a reputation for being
melancholy and asks him if what she has heard is true. When Jaques answers
that he loves melancholy rather than laughter, Rosalind answers that any
