Book IX

Summary.

The Platonists distinguish the good demons from bad demons. Augustine
argues that there does not exist any way for the human soul to reach God
through any demon. The demons allegedly are responsible for the passions and
evil which the poets attribute falsely to the gods. The gods live in heaven,
while the demons dwell in the air and on earth. Evidently, they cannot serve
in any capacity as a mediator between the gods and man.
