1. What were some of the major influences in the life of Augustine which
led directly to his conversion and baptism?
In the thirty-three years preceding his baptism, the major influence upon
Augustine was his mother Monica. Her piety and single-minded effort to bring
her son to the altar cannot be underestimated. Augustine tells how she prayed
for this one favor, and admitted his indebtedness to his mother for the gift
