Background.
The city of Rome was captured and put to the sword by the army of Aleric
in 410. This marked the first occasion that the capital of the once great
empire had been seized in over seven hundred years. The pagans, still smarting
from the political defeat by which they no longer were recognized as the state
religion and were no longer given the freedom to exercise their beliefs,
blamed the defeat of the Romans upon the rejection of the old gods under whom
