I GOT a book for Christmas. The Life of Beethoven, by Alexander Thayer. The author trawled through the personal and business correspondence of the composer in hope of shedding more light on his genius. On page 208, I read: "A letter by Beethoven. Dated Vienna, 1 November, 1806, referring to his involvement with a project originally proposed in 1803 by an earnest promoter of good music, George Thomson, a Scottish gentleman - that of making the most extensive collection possible of the music of Scotland."
