SO THIS is what Robert Burns would have looked like if he'd made it to the age of 76. Still irresistible to women. Still with a twinkle in his eye.

For of course, Glasgow-born John Cairney WAS Burns for a whole generation when he played the Scottish Bard on the BBC series on his life in the 60s.

And 15 years after he supposedly retired to New Zealand with his second wife, actress and writer Alannah O'Sullivan, he is talking about returning to Scotland to live in time for the 250th anniversary of Burns' birth in 2009.

And he hasn't finished with the Bard. Get ready for Burns the Musical.
