Eddi will never repeat her improbable best female Brit Award on the back of this album, but deserves every plaudit going for woman- handling Burns away from the haggis and neeps circuit and rooting him firmly in a contemporary folk tradition. Her reading of 'Ye Jacobites' ranks with anything Sandy Denny did with Fairport Convention, but the real strength of the record is the freshness Reader brings to gnarled old favourites such as 'Ae Fond Kiss' and 'Charlie is my Darling', the latter having the strange air of a ...
