The article attempts an investigation into Robert Browning's collection "Dramatic Lyrics" with the purpose of linking the poet's endeavor to his concept of poetic genre, particularly in relation to the ideas of the lyrical and the dramatic. As it appeared in the Cambridge Edition of 1895, "Dramatic Lyrics" is a much revised volume, which came out as a culmination of a series of additions and deletions, done to the earlier editions and could thus represent the final settlement of the poems under the heading of "Dramatic Lyrics."
