The romance between the English poets Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning is a remarkable love story.

Elizabeth Barrett (1806-1861) was born in Durham, England. She was an intelligent child, who learned to speak Greek and Latin. Her father published one of her first poems when she was 13. Elizabeth injured her spine when she fell from a horse at the age of 15. She became an invalid but amused herself by writing poetry and letters.

Robert Browning (1812-1889) was born in Camberwell, near London. As a young man, he wrote poetry also, but critics did not like it. Browning ...
