Robert Browning named the bishop Sylvester in his poem 'Bishop Blougram's Apology' to allude to the Janus image associated to the name. This involves the similarity of New Year's Eve and St. Sylvester's Night in Italy. However, the allusion goes beyond this sameness. It also intends to reflect the two-faced character of Nicholas Cardinal Wiseman, the Archbishop of Westminister in 1850, upon Browning's Sylvester Blougram.
